How to playback HMC-40 slow motion?

I'm shooting PH 720 60p, PH 1080 24p, and PH 720 30p and when I want to play it back, it does it as regular speed. How do I get to play back in slow motion?

thanks

Slow it down. No point to slow down 24p, but you can slow down 60p/60i to 30p/24p, or you can slow down 30p to 24p.

...how do I slow it down in camera? I don't want to shoot 60i since it's hideous. And why would I convert 60p/30p to 24p? I just want to shoot 60p and play it back at 24p. Unless you were referring to post work, but the whole point of shooting a faster frame rate is so that I don't have to deal with that crap in post like I would with a DV camera.

I know that on the hpx170, I go to Recording Setup and choose 720;30pN or 720;24pN then overcrank to whatever my desired speed is (and then it plays back at 720;30pN or 720;24pN). I also realize that I can only play back footage that is shot that the recording speed that the camera is currently set at.

The HMC40 does not allow overcranking in camera. I don't know why 60i is hideous, it is pretty much the same as 60p, though 60p is easier to work with as it is progressive.

I don't see how shooting 720;24pN overcranked to 60p is different from shooting 720p60. In either case you have to fiddle with the menu, and the only difference that you get native 24p file in the latter case. No big deal for me, slowing down on a timeline is a one second deal.

A bigger deal that the HMC40 does not allow for 20 different over/under frame rates.

uhhh what?

60i = 30 fps (half frames)
60p = 60 fps (full frames)

and what I'm basically asking is how do I slow down the timeline so that I'm displaying 60p at 24 frames per second? I don't want to "slow down 60p to 24p," or "convert 60p to 24p," I simply want to play back native 60p footage at 24 frames per second.

You cannot do it in-camera. Pull the 60p footage into your NLE in a 24p timeline, and tell the footage you want it to play back at 40% speed.

They've already said it, the feature you speak of only exists in DVCHDPro cameras.

However, if you do want to watch something you shot slowed down on the camera, there actually is a slow motion feature on the remote. It plays back slower than 40%, so will not be fluid, however is a very useful feature to review footage and see if you got what you were going for or want to examine still frames closer. You can also do this without the remote by pausing a video and then holding the -/+ buttons... took me forever to find that trick out!

Oooh, mcsmooth just schooled me! That's right, I'd totally forgotten about that! Thanks for bringing it up.
Haha, it's a rare occurrence. I've learned a ton from your posts (and a book) over the years so, it's nice to give back for once ;)

I don't think I realized how much I rely on the slow motion playback until I misplaced the remote for a few months. Of course I didn't figure out the button trick until a week before I found the remote... very valuable in the field.
