i am very new to this. I just received a dv tape that contains a music video i need to review. how can I play PAL dv tape on my ntsc dvx100a? i get "unplayable tape (other format)"
Just be careful - I know it's not what you want to do right now, but if you think you'll ever want to use the PAL device as a deck to capture to your NLE, you may have timecode issues with some cheap mini-DV cameras. For example, the Panasonic ones. I also read that Canon had trouble with FCP. I believe that Sony cameras will read any timecode from another camera, so if you think you'll be using it for that purpose, you may want to look at one of theirs.
I don't know that model number, so I can't say. I do have a couple of tips that might help you though:
1. Before you buy a camera, check with the store that they will let you return it if it does not do what you need it to do.
2. If you can, take a tape with you which has footage and timecode on it which you need the camera to read, and ask them to let you play the tape on the camera you are interested in. If you can see the timecode on the screen when you are playing the tape in the camera, there's a good chance it will have no problems with your NLE.
I tried a couple of Panasonics in the store and none of them would read the timecode from tapes shot on my DVX. I also spoke to Panasonic in Australia and they advised that none of their lower end cameras would read timecode shot on another camera. I didn't bother trying any Canons, since I had read some people had trouble with them when using FCP. I tried a couple of Sony cams and they worked fine. I ended up buying the Sony DCR-HC20, which works well with FCP.
adtv, I have had a Pany NV-DS55 for about 5 years & no problems with reading tapes from my DVX. It wasn't a 'cheapy' but consider that the batteries will fit your DVX & you will have an extra charger.
