How to make AE work faster?

With more RAM you will get more 'memory frames' for rendering previews.
With a better graphics card you will increase overall it's performance.
Well with a dual cpu system you will feel like working with Word.

By 2k you mean 2gig of RAM? If so there's no need to buy more RAM. Invest into a really good supported graphic card.

It also depends what version of AE you have. AE 6.5 and earlier would only benefit from a better video card in certain situations such as previewing. AE 7 included the ability to render using the GPU. However, the GPU acceleration does not speed up everything, so if you use a lot of effects/plugins, you won't see much improvement (if any). In such a situation, your CPU then becomes the workhorse.

Hehe.. I've never done a shot on a machine that fast... work smarter.

The best advice yet. You can throw all the money you want at fast video cards and tons of RAM, but in the end what your squander in speed now will be squandered when you upgrade your comp. Think through your comps, and be smart and everything will improve. Workflow is key.

:)

Greggl is right, your machine is plenty fast -

If you want to go faster, don't work at full quality until you abosolutely need to, or in general - don't activate effects or all the layers until you need to. (i.e. Put your comp at a quarter res.)

Read Mark Christiansen's book, After Effects Studio Techniques, it has a lot of time-saving and workflow advice.

I just picked up a radeon 9800, 256mb card. apparently my old card was prehistoric.
AE works great and fast now. Im getting a copy of Nucleo Pro as well.

Great advice though was i need to work smarter!

I prefer to work harder not smarter.
That gives me the edge in that I get an extra 1/2 step backwards....2 steps forward and 1.5 steps backwards!
