How to make a room smokey

Is there some easy way to smoke up a room, ie, make it look like its filled with cigarette smoke, without actually using tobacco smoke? I thought about dry ice in water, but was wondering if any one made some kind of simple chemical thing that simulates smoke. Probably stupid question, but wanted to check before I pollute my actor's lungs. Thanks.

Remember water based fog machines smell about as awful as cigs.. In my experience, anyways.
The effect does look very cool on camera and "party foggers" are under $30 at discount stores.

Actually a hazer works better than a fog machine. Fog machines usually produce a "fog" that sits low to the ground. A hazer will fill the air with a much finer particle.

If it's a public building you will need to get clearance to use it from building security. Some hazers will set off the fire alarms.... I found that out the hard way.

I know where I can buy one about 20 miles from my home and I know three places locally where I can rent one..... But this is Vegas BaBy!...

What happens in Vegas..... usually happens in a haze....

wells, where exactly in west texas are you?

I believe Rosco (or was it Mole ?) used to sell "canned fog". Literally a spray can that would mist up a good size room. Wasn't all that expensive.

You can buy Fantasy FX Haze-In-a-Can for $10 or $12 a pop. The stuff is really good for creating cigarette smoke effects and it's non-toxic. One can will produce a *lot* of haze. Depending on how you use it, you can make things look mildly hazy to really foggy.

check out my film in the screen grabs section, it has a scene where its real smokey and it looks pretty good

I have this nice theatrical/film lighting supply store near me and they're always coming up with good suggestions. They let me try out the canned haze inside the store and I thought it was excellent, cheap and portable. Damgerous place to hang out though--they were trying to entice me with a new on-camera Frezzi dimmable LED light today. :)

Thanks all, really appreciate it. I swear, this site deserves some kind of continuing education Oscar,--ask a question, get the answer, learn something new.

Wow, I'm glad someone asked this. Otherwise I'd be shooting a scene inside a bar in a month or so saying: "Jeez, isn't there some way to make this look smokier?"

IS there a US dealer for this? The link shows the price in British Pounds. I did find a dealer on E-bay (10 bucks a can), but I'd rather go with someone more reputable.

the other similar product is Diffusion in a Can. Do a google search, there are a lot of photo/video places that carry it or Fantasy FX. It's great stuff.
