How to light background like this?

Thanks for your response and how it is achieved that background gradient- dark to light in the center?

any number of ways. i would probably start with a fresnel raking across at an angle to cover more of the background and to get the oval shape. adjust spot/flood to control the hardness of the fall-off (gradient) and use doors to fine tune the shape. it's likely more than one source.

yes vignetta in the post seems to be simple way how to achieve something like that, but do you really think it is vignetta, because not all corners are similarly dark and when they show the close up of narrator vignetta is only on the top corners

i imagine they didn't relight for the close-ups, so yeah, vignette in post makes sense.

i just wish that edge light was dialed down. :)

Slide the vignette around- up/down, left/right?

I just can't figure out, if you are doing it in the post with vignetta why would you do it improper- I mean not all corners equally and if that was done in post with vignetta wouldn't you make for the close up shots same vignetta as for the medium...

My buddy told me this:

Step 1: gray photo paper or blank wall without any other light hitting it.
Step 2: hit it with a partly diffused/unfocused spotlight at an angle.
Step 3: profit.

look at the composition of each shot.

That looks like gray seamless paper, lit with a dedicated Fresnel or other light capable of an even field and soft edge.
