How to hook Audio Technica ATR35s to HMC150?

Quick Q. Tried hooking up my ATR35s to my HMC150 at the weekend and got no sound but it works fine hooked up to my Zoom H2. Surprisingly my Rode VM hooks up to BOTH and works.

Any ideas on that one?

A confuzed Rik! :D

Well, the ATR35s is a pretty chintzy lav mic, with a 1/8" unbalanced connector. How are you connecting it to the HMC150?

It may well be chintzy buts its miles better than the onboard mic that picks up the lightest touch and sounds like a train approaching the station when you zoom.

Its connected via an XLR to 3.5mm Mono convertor which I use with my Rode Videomic (which too when mounted to the cam picks up zoom noise).

Ended up running it out to my Zoom H2 when I couldnt get it to work but its a PITA syncing audio when you've got lots of stops and starts, cuts and different interviewies on the go.

Cheers,

Rik

Hm. Does the little inline module take a battery, or is it supposed to work on camera-supplied power?

Double system sound is pretty common. Easy to sync if you slate each take.

How did you connect it to the Zoom? As I recall, the Rode VideoMic cable terminates in a 1/8 stereo plug wired so it feeds its mono signal to both left and right (tip and ring) when plugged into a stereo mic input. The adapter sends the tip and ring together to XLR pin 2 and grounds XLR pin 3. I'm betting that when you plug a mono 1/8 TS plug such as on the ATR35, the tip contacts the tip but the adapter's ring connector contacts the plug'ss sleeve so the signal gets shorted to ground.

Think you nailed.

Got a 3.5mm mono female to 3.5mm stereo male jack plug and put it inline - all works as expected now!

Many thanks for that :)
