How to get uncompressed Full HD from your D800

Hi all,

I did this little video a while ago after a few people asked how to get the fabled uncompressed HD signal out of the Nikon D800 over the HDMI connector to feed an external recorder or monitor. The main issue was simply setting the right menu options to get rid on the on screen Live View display.

Here's the video anyway, hope it's useful!

absolut useful many thanks, just a question, do you know if same protocol could be applied on D7100?

All Nikon DSLRs with the Expeed 3 processor can provide uncompressed video out. This includes the D4, D800/D800E, D600, D7100, and D5200. For Canon, only the EOS-1D and 5DMk3 with firmware 1.2.1 can do it.

The HDMI menu options on the D7100 are different than on the D800. There are 2 submenus: Output Resolution and Device Control.

In the Output Resolution menu, you select the format that will be output from the HDMI port: Auto, 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080p, or 1080i. "Auto" selects the same frame size and rate as your movie setting, so that's the one that I recommend.

In the Device Control menu, select "ON" if you have the camera connected to a TV with HDMI-CEC. Then you can control playback on the camera with the TV remote. Otherwise select "OFF" - that's my recommendation.

In LiveView mode, you can use the "i" and "info" buttons to overlay different menus on the video. Just keep pressing these buttons until there are no overlays, then you have clean uncompressed video out of the HDMI port. Note that you have to monitor the HDMI output on an external monitor (or on your recorder if it has a monitor) because the HDMI output is sometimes different from the LCD display on the camera.

Some quirky behavior on the D7100:

1. If you're shooting in 1080i50, 1080i50, 720p60 or 720p50 modes, then the camera LCD will go black when you have an HDMI device attached.

2. If you're shooting in 1080p30, 1080p25 or 1080p24 modes and you select the HDMI output as 1080p, the camera only outputs a 720p signal out the HDMI port. However, if you select the HDMI output as AUTO or 1080i, then the camera will output a 1080 signal. I think this is because there is no 1080p mode in the HDMI 1.3a spec, so the camera actually outputs a psf video on the 1080i signal.
