GH5 How to get the best low light, high quality from a GH5

This perception is simply because the HLG curve stores shadows within a traditional gamma curve. Put simply, the darks are dark. VLOG-L raises the shadows, revealing the noise. Adjust the shadows back to natural a display range, and the noise won't be evident...or at least not more evident than in any other profile.

HLG isn't "better" than a LOG profile. It's just different. I think a lot of people find HLG easier to work with because half of the image is "normal", but it isn't cleaner than VLOG-L, doesn't retain more DR, etc.

When I tested V-LOG vs HLG in a low light high ISO scene using Paul's LUT's to bring them into REC709 I noticed slightly (and I mean slightly) less noise in mid tone areas for HLG and not just the shadows. Again the main reason I use HLG in place of V-LOG is that it uses the whole data range of the codec. Also differences in the shadow areas of both profiles are pretty academic as there is so much noise it's not really a usable part of the image anyway.

HLG uses limited range of codec 64-940 levels. It still uses much more than vlogL so it has smoother gradations.

Has someone watched HLG with a 10bit HDR TV straight from card. Does it look good and normal? If using rec709 display the HLG looks very dark and muted because it uses much larger rec2020 color space.

Right. HLG matches a normal gamma curve from 0-40 IRE. Midtones are not as lifted as with VLOG-L. Noise will be less noticeable, but the sensor response remains the same.

How did you verify that the GH5's HLG profile uses a Rec. 2020 color gamut? HLG is a luma curve that is not necessarily tied to any one color space. I haven't found documentation that indicates the GH5 uses a color space wider than that of Rec. 709. (Not saying it doesn't, just haven't found verification that it does.)

The GH5 HLG file exif says rec2020. Colors are also visible faint just like they belong to larger color space. Colors goes to max only if there are very vidid colors in the scene. Normal profiles saturates to max more easily. There is of course a sensor limit how large color space it can see.

Ah, I hadn't bothered to look at the EXIF. Good to know!

SOMEWHAT OFF topic....
(SOMEWHAT!)

Can't speak of GH5 but since you mentioned shooting interview, for you and others:

We just finished, 2 days ago, an interview, with the hardest person to get, for our doc movie. After 2 monthes of trying to find bloody the date, and after Traveled 7 hours to location we had a hard learned lesson for fairly cheap:

Despite my insist on GH cameras (any), producer decided on Sony A7s mark2 because of "magic of FF" in her opininon (BOKEH).
We shot 4K and both cameras were randomly turning off, on their on. I assume infamuus sensor heating issue. Something that NEVER EVER happened with Panasonic (knock knock knock in the wood).

Its pure luck that movie will be mostly b roll Kenburnian style and that audio recorder an sennheisers worked impecably. Shame on you sonnys....

KNOWLEDGE OBTAINED?

Never trust SONY A7Smark2 to be your MAIN camera!!!
(****, 3 grand down, and you still can nottrust it!?!?!?! You have to treat it as a specialty gear and never as a workhorse :(
