How to get Nikon D90 files ingested into FCP?

I searched this forum and didn't find anything. I shot some footage with my D90 yesterday and now I want to edit something together but I am not sure what the proper way is of getting it into the computer. I was told of 2 things I could try and not sure if either is the correct way.

1. I was told to hook my camera up to the computer, open FCP and bring up Log and Transfer and all my D90 video clips will show up on the screen and I just drag over what I wanted to ingest. I tried this the other day and my clips never showed up on the screen. I asked the person if it was the same as if I had a P2 card and wanted to ingest that footage and they told me yes.

2. I was told to use something called MPEG Streamclip that is supposed to convert the avi files so I can edit them in FCP. Now will the conversion cause the quality to be degraded?

Yeah there is no plugin for direct import so you'd have to convert the files first. I'd suggest into ProRes. you could do this in any number of programs- Compressor, MPEG STreamclip, etc.

The D90 shoots motionjpeg as well as an option. Is there a reason you choose to shoot AVI?

In any case, if it is motionjpeg, you can open them in the QTPro Player and export there to an easy set up, and it might work with AVIs.

Whomever told you you could use L/T to get the clips in is probably misinformed.

I just searched the menus on my camera and I didn't see motionjpeg listed. I think I am just stuck with an AVI file. I have heard other D90 owners having to convert their files over but I never paid any attention to it until now since I shot some video footage with it over the weekend. Thanks anyway.
