how to get good screen grabs?

Trying to get some stills from HVX footage today. They look great when paused on the timeline, and in a quicktime player.. but when I export them and open in photoshop the finer edges are very jaggy.. What am i missing?? I've tried deinterlacing, and that's not it.. His arms for instance, and very smooth when paused on the timeline, and in quicktime.. but not here.... This is a 1to1 crop of HVX footage..

What format was this recorded in?

What were the camera settings?

Is this from a 720, 1080 or SD recording?

Also helpful would be mentioning the Editing software you are using. That way someone familiar with the software you use could give you some pointers.

1080i60.. using final cut pro.. but copy paste from the clip out of quicktime player looks exactly the same as an export of a single frame from the FCP time lilne..

But then you pretty much have answered your own question...

1. You shot interlaced (why? Do you know any 1080 panel that displays interlaced?)
2. This is an extremely small part of a 1080 image
3. AND you lose rez in the codec. NTSC 1080 DVCPROHD is 1280 x 1080.
Usually not a problem at all, but combined with the 2 other factors - it has some impact.

You also quickly become aware of the 4:2:2 colorsampling when pulling stills from DVCPRO HD and compare them to "real" stills.

All these factors have some impact on your image.

yes it's small.. but I must have had one too many beers the other night... i went back into final cut today and exporeted and now it looks good.. weird.. but I'm happy.. This footage is actually 72030PN at 60 and this is a different framing, but the other day.. All my export were look bad... or maybe my eyes were just crossed.. anyhow... it's all good... Also I think it may have had something to do with me trying to use pixel aspect ratio in ps instead of resizing the image.... if anyone's interested, you can see a teaser with this footage on my site at nooneuknow dot com
