How to get footage to look like it does on the LCD

Guys I'm struggling here. First off, all the footage my 100a shoots looks great in the VF and LCD. I capture to FCP and it looks all "muddy" and kind of dull, no color, no brightness.

Is there a simple fix, like simply adjusting gamma. I've tried several things, but it seems that I can't get it to match what the LCD is displaying.

Any help is appreciated. Sorry to ask such a lame question.

basically, what your computer monitor is showing you is not what the footage will actualy look like. There are several things you can do. First, if the monitor looks really bad you could get a calibrater like the "spyder" to get your monitor within workable measures. Better yet you could just get an NTSC monitor and preview your footage on there. Trust me, your colors are not lost, they are there, the computer is just trying to dumb down the footage because monitors are capable of much more resolution, color depth and contrast than a normal TV.

What sharky said and...

Your computer is probably showing everything more dull than it will appear on a TV (because of the greater resolution and latitude on the computer monitor and they way it interprets RGB colors) and your LCD is probably showing more color than you might see on TV. So you'll probably want to look at your footage on a real TV or a production monitor to get a better idea of what it really looks like.

excellent.... funny as it is, I have yet to see any of my footage on the T.V. I've been too into capturing more and more footage.

Thank you both for the info.

In all cases, both the TV monitor as well as the computer monitor need to be properly callibrated. A poorly set up TV monitor does more harm than good once the program gets into the distribution channels. At a minimum use www.videoessentials.com to get that callibrated.

Look at it from another direction. Match your LCD/EVF to the OUTPUT, not the other way around. Run your camera into a well-calibrated monitor (NTSC) and then adjust the LCD/EVF to match what you see (as closely as possible). Then, when you're shooting without an external monitor, you can be more sure that WYSIWYG.

O.K. I'm finally starting to get it.

First calibrate my monitors properly. I've got the "video essentials dvd" and am thinking about buying one of the $250 Macbeth calibrators to help me get fine tuned.

THEN, calibrate the viewfinder on the camera so I know what I'm really capturing. That really does make perfect sense. I sure wish it all looked like it does in the camera right now. It's bright and crisp and vibrant. Everything on TV or computer is muddy and kind of dull. Red and blue look good, but my greens are horrible... and considering I was in Kauai for 2 weeks, it sucks to have your greens not looking good.

I'm yet to start any color correction though.

Thanks again for all the help and info.
