How to fix a broken Singh Ray Vari-N-Duo

I have recently dropped and cracked my Singh Ray Vari-N-Duo :cry:. There is a crack on the front glass element. Singh Ray say they would fix it for me for $280. I could try and fix it myself but haven't a clue on how to take it apart or how to retrofit another filter in place of the broken one. Any ideas?
 
I think you might find that you'd have to spend half of what Singh Ray is asking, in order to get a decent filter. Then you would likely not be getting a final product that works as good as the original because Singh Ray has purportedly put some thought into matching the front and back elements.

I know how you must feel. I am overcome by dread every time I mount or unmount my Vari N.
