How to figure out ones day rate?

I'm slowly getting more and more jobs each month, I usually just take whatever is being offered since I'm still in school and i'm used to working for free, its kind of a luxury to be paid at this point. But increasingly employers have been asking about my day rate and I never actually had or thought of one... any help on the subject?

my equipment:
sd 302 + tascam hdp2
oktava mk12
at897
ktek boompole
g2 wireless

Day rates really depend on location and what range the market in that area offers. Where are you located?

Also, if you are getting paid work, you need to establish a competitive rate. If you keep working for peanuts, you may draw the ire of other sound folks in the area for undercutting them.

I work around Los Angeles and Orange County areas, i'm just clueless on the rates, usually they just offer an amount and I say yes. Don't know the average is
and I don't usually ask other mixers since its a personal question. Can you guys give me rough samples? I've read the lowest people do it for is $200

Just FYI, $200/day is pretty low. Too low, in fact... even for my area. I'd be suspect of anyone working for that rate, especially with their own gear.
