How to export OMF- AVID......

I have to export my files from Avid express for a professional mixing house.

The engineer has asked me to export an omf with embedded audio and 1-2 sec handles.

How do I do this? Also, do I remove any fades if I have placed them in.

Hey, if you still need help...

-Go to export your sequence (either right-click > export, or file > export), and in the "Export As..." window, go into 'Options' to access the export settings...

-From the 'Export As' drop down menu at the top, select either OMF 2.0 or OMF 1.0 depending on what your audio house wants (probably 2.0).

-You'll want to check the 'include all audio tracks in sequence' checkbox...

-Depending on what version of Xpress youre on, either:
select 'Consolidate and Embed Media' as your export method
- OR -
select 'Consolidate Media' as the export method and 'Embedded in AAF' from the "Audio" drop down menu...

((I forget which one because of the differences between Media Composer and Xpress, but these tasks can be done on each platform, just in different looking menus)).

-Below Export Method, you can set handle length and you can also choose to include your rendered audio effects or to render them right there for the export.

...hope this helps!

Hey -
I am having quite a problem, I have no OMF option in any of my export options...
Any ideas?
Thanks!

it may not be a preset...but it ought to be an option to export.
just curious, what version are you on?

when you go to export, click on the "Options" button and click on the pulldown menu at the top to select OMF 2.0...

this would appear to be very simple, in that pulldown bar I only have the AAF and AFE options in the top category, I am working on Xpress 5.6.4

do i need plugins or update?

DNxHD projects with MXF media don't have the option to export OMF. Export an AAF instead, the export process is similar to OMF and the import to Pro Tools should be no different than importing an OMF. For the record I said, should. There are some issues with older versions of Pro Tools, versions 7.1 & 7.4 should work fine.

I'd call the sound designer and ask if they can import an AAF from your Avid, maybe send them over a small test before the real session to validate that it works. Otherwise wait for Michael, Butcher or some other power user to chime in with an elegant workaround.

thanks for that, do you have any ideas as to why i do not have that option? also this is a 720/24pn project not a DNxHD project

All HD footage is in the MXF Format. Which means no native OMF export.

You could probably open up your bin and sequence in a 1080 project, and then use the pulldown to downconvert to SD, then transcode your footage to OMF, but thats a whole lot of work, and I'm not sure what the end repercussions on that would be in terms of frame accuracy and whatnot.

However, you shouldn't have to worry about any of this, since (assuming they are editing in ProTools) they can take AAF just fine. And the best part is, they will swear blind that they can't. Just let them know that they can import the AAF info the same way that they import the OMF data.
