How to edit from hard drive?

I have a few projects coming up in a week and I was wondering exactly how to transfer your footage from the SD cards to an external or internal Hard drive and open them up in FCP 7 at a later time?

I create a project folder. In the project folder I create a card folder for each card (Card 1, Card 2 etc).

I put each (write protected) card in turn in to a card reader attached to the computer and copy the ENTIRE CARD to it's card folder including all the directory structure - EVERYTHING.

Then when I fire up FCP I point the Log & Transfer window at the Card x folder and it imports as if it were importing from the card itself.

A nice thing about doing it this way is being able to point to multiple cards and transcode at the same time all of your files... for example, you get home and want to work on a project the next day, but you have 4 cards. Just move them to their own folder and ad all 4 directories to the queue... Next day comes and all footage is there ready to do anything =) very helpful,
I have done 12-14 hours of footage (overnight) and go to sleep. and I'm cutting the next morning.

Careful with this. I've tried it myself with my latest project and found I have duplicates and essential clips that didn't even transcode. Also everything is radically out of order. I had to delete all the clips and start it again one by one.
This is the first time its happened to me however though, and I've done several project before it with no problem.

Thanks for the heads up! I usually only do a project at a time, then I would dump all the footage on the timeline and compare it with the camera time code (i reset time code for every event, also write it down for future reference)

So far i never had any problems, but I'll keep it in mind!

I use vegas..and there are big problems with this. One..is you have to keep your footage on the cards if you save your file and want to come back to reedit. It looks for the same source...the other is the cards are so much slower that a good hard drive.
