How to edit 720 50p Material?

Hi Guys,

i'am experimenting with HMC151 Footage shot in 720 50p (PAL).

I'm editing in Edius and i dont know what settings should i use if i want to edit native 50p but also make slowmo's out of the 50p Material... I know i have to "interpret" the file(s) to 25p in the file-properirtys if i want to make SlowMo's.

Would be a 720 50p Timeline the correct setting or 720 25p ?

If i use a 50p Timeline setting and interpret the media as 25p for SlowMo i would think that edius have to calculate the missing 25 frames? or am i wrong?

Do you want the overall project to have the appearance of 50p, or the appearance of 25p?

If you're using 50p footage as slo-mo on a 25p timeline, you slow the footage to 50%. Then, each 50p frame lines up with a 25p frame on the timeline, and you have smooth slo-mo. No resampling or calculation or creation of frames (interpolation) necessary.

@ jeree... I think i dont need Tempgnc Exprees...

Well i imagine having HMC151 Material in 720 50p... For example some skating stuff... i

I would like to edit some clips "normal" with full speed and on the other hand i want to slow some clips down - still in the same project and the same footage.

Therefore Should I use a 25p Timeline-setting or did i missunderstood you, David?

Set up 25p sequence and import your 720p50 footage. When you drag 50p clips on the timeline they will play in normal speed but 25 frames per/s instead of 50 fps.
Clips that you want slowed down interpret as 25p in the bin, and they will play @50% speed in the timeline and also at 25fps.
You will get 25 fps movie with true slomo full 25 fps shots. doesn't get much cooler or easier.

Sounds kinda logical to me...

But i'm still asking myself if i may "lose" quality when using a 25p project at all? For example if im just doing 2 or 3 slomos of 70 clips... . So the main part could be 50p... .

Because even if u use a 50p Project i can interpret the clips i want to slow down as "25p" and it will play @50% speed... .

In my opinion it is not so much about quality as it is about general feel to it. More film like 25 vs realistic, sharp, TV like 50 fps. Even in movies when they wanted to create "look from the tv camera" they filmed at higher frame rates (no slomo, normal speed play).

It is not something that is immanent to that particular frame rate of 24 fps, it is just that we are accustomed to it, and when we see it we involuntary associate it to that "film look".
But let's set that a side.

If you want to slow down your 50fps footage and get a "true" slow motion, you have to play it slower. Google overcranking and undercranking.
If you for example use 50p project, and the shots that you want to slow down you interpret as 25p, yes you will get them to play at 50% speed, but they will play at 50fps, so again your NLE will have to somehow create / calculate / interpolate missing 50% frames.

720 50p will give you really good slo-mo, you don't need to mess around with 25p unless you're looking for the so-called film look. If you go for 25p experiment with your output options you may find some snags depending on what other software you use.

I don't get this.
Again, the point is to achieve slow motion that does not contain digitally calculated frames. If you have 50 frames in one second, if you play it at a speed of 25 frames per sec you'll get 2 seconds of footage at 50% speed.

If you want to have 50p playback in the final movie, and to have slow motion shots in, shots that are to be made slow motion from 50p footage, your NLE or 3rd party plugins or whatever software you use HAS to digitally create frames, some better then others, but that is a totally different game.
Straight forward slow motion, created in the same way as 100 years ago, is to shoot for example 60 fps and than play it back at a 24 fps speed for 40% rate etc. Or in case of HMC to shoot 50fps and play it back at a 25 fps speed for TRUE 50% slow motion, that even the best software cannot produce digitally.
This is as straight forward as it gets.

I get cleaner and better motion exports by editing on a 50fps time line with 720p 50fps footage. I just slow down the bits i need as slowmo ( mentioned above) and export the lot as 50fps. I then re-import to a 50fps timeline and convert the whole thing to 25fps. I know it's one extra step but the results are better. Also if you are using Mercalli on 50fps footage you need to export in 50fps for it to work ( this is the other reason i export 50 and reimport)

Cheers Rambo
