How to convert MTS to DV or something else (on a mac)

Hi

I have some MTS files from my GH-1, and I can't open them in Final Cut Pro, Compressor or Quicktime. I can play them in VLC though.

I'm wondering how I should go about coverting them to something I can work with.

I might add that I'm going to downscale them and put them on a webpage, if that makes any difference, but I guess I should just convert them using some program, and then do the downscale in Compressor for the web.

Btw, isn't MTS the format that I'm supposed to record in on my GH-10 for best quailty (the format that the camera uses when I select AVCHD) ?

At least that's the only thing that gives me the possibility of doing long recordings. If I select MOTION JPEG, then I'm limited to 2gb recordings at a time. But these are easier to work with though.

You need to import .mts files into FCP for editing. Use FCP's Log and Transfer utility to transcode the .mts files to ProRes422 format, then you can edit the footage.

If you simply copied the .mts files from your SD card to your hard drive, you may not be able to Log and Transfer because you've disrupted the original file and folder structure of the AVCHD folds on your media card. Orphaned .mts files can still be transcoded to a FCP-happy format like ProRes or AIC using the 3rd party VoltaicHD program from Shedworx.
