how to control zoom and focus at same time

ive been doing research on what video camera to buy and am somewhat tempted to buy the pana gh1 since theres is so much hype about video capable dslrs

even though i did read the article here about the motion artifacts and distortion - im very impressed at some of the footage ive seen on vimeo and yt

im am no stranger to a camaera as i use one at work (usually a sony d30 or d50 on sticks) however my primary concern with buying a dslr for video is how i can control the zoom and focus (preferably one with each hand) at the same time since one hand will be needed to hold the actual camera

are you wanting to change focus to another object while zooming?

not necessarily another object... say the subject that you are filming moves in closer and you have to zoom out to keep him/her in proper frame and at the same time adjust the focus to compensate

the stock lens has auto continuous focus

does it work well though?
i have not had good experience with autofocus in the past.

also im just used to and would really love to have zoom and focus (one in each hand) if possible

i was wondering if there is maybe some sort of vest/device that would support the majority of the weight of the camera while i have each hand on each ring and am also panning/tilting by gently holding the lens (not the actual weight of it though)

You cant really zoom with the stock lens

You cant really zoom with the stock lens

ie 14-140, well you can zoom but you get issues like exposure bumps, depending where you are on the aperture, remember this is a f4-5.6 zoom lens and even if you lock exposure, you can quite obviously see the exposure bumps, even though its supposed to be stepless and all that, I see these bumps.

The focus tracking however with the 14-140 is both smooth, silent and imo rarely loses focus but it is a "threat" for critical work, but for most people shooting for fun, you just fade/cut or mask those bits, knowbody ever knows if you take enough footage!

You should really get your hands on the kit lens before you buy. It's pretty difficult to do a smooth zoom with it while shooting, and the focus ring is not the easiest thing to use either. If you're used to powered zooms and lenses that were designed to be manually focused, the kit lens might not feel how you expect it to feel.

mkeep, can you zoom without exposure change?
