How to compress AVCHD to post on internet

A newbie question - can anyone recommend a (preferably free) program that will allow me to transcode and compress my AVCHD *.MTS files so that I can upload them to youtube/vimeo? I've been using my GH1 to take photos to post to my travel blog and am limited to using internet cafes with windows. The originals take too long to upload as they are. Hope someone can help, TIA JJJ
