How to change the way Clips get their file-name

I want the clip file names to be unique, regardless of using several SD cards, and regardless of formatting these cards. I also have a Canon HF 10 camera, and the file names here get the YYYYmmDDHHMMSS.m2ts format, this makes them truly unique.
As it is now, I have several 0014.MTS files already on my harddisk. This is at the best rather inconvenient, at the worse right-out dangerous. I have to rename the files to use them in the same project in a sensible way.

Is there an option on the HMC 151 camera to change the way clips are named?

Thanks, I was not aware of this. Anyhows - while it might help in some cases, I really want the camera itself to give files (clips) unique names. The Year, month, day, hour, minute and second when shooting the clip started - what can be better? Pity an excellent semi pro camera as the HMC 150/151 does not do this, when plain consumer camcorders do it.

I hear you. Another pain is that the .mts files are not independent. Programs like the MainConcept DVCPRO HD transcoder require the entire folder structure to be present.

My workflow is to save copies of the entire folder structure (the 'PRIVATE' folder) into uniquely named folders, 00001, 00002, 00003, etc. That at least keeps everything sorted chronologically.

But in a year's time, you're going to have a million files named 00001.MTS ;)

Hah, I can imagine your files get moved around and your NLE is asking you for '00001.mts'.

Well maybe I shouldn't laugh... But shoot, even if you don't edit with Vegas you can still use the feature if your on PC.

I am a programmer. I will write a small utility, which will run a batch process and rename the MTS files, based on their "Date modified" property. Which in this case happens to correspond with the exact time when they were shot.
