How-to: $35 DIY Teleprompter for LCD or iPad

I wanted to convert my 10" LCD monitor (which I found last year, thanks to DVXuser) into a small, simple teleprompter. I was able to do it for $35 in parts, and I made a video chronicling the build and testing it out.

This probably belongs in the DIY forum?

That aside, good job on the teleprompter and an even better job on the video documenting the build. Good sense of humor too.

Very good! I was surprised to see window glass performing as well as beam splitter glass. I would think you could reduce the plywood and mounting wood by a factor of 2/3 in thickness and save a lot of weight.

We did something very similar at work... Except we used the Cinevate DSLR rig and frankensteined it... So it ultimately costs about $3500 for this teleprompter... Plus an iPad. Yours seems a little more feasible.

I wouldn't say the regular glass performs as well, but it's good enough. (The image become slightly blurry because it reflects off both sides of the glass pane, whereas a mirrored glass like beamsplitter wouldn't have that problem, and I'm guessing would be much brighter.)

I considered cutting out a big rectangle under the monitor to cut the wood weight down, but it only weighs 4 lbs. (7 lbs. with my Panasonic GH2 camera and LCD), so I'm pretty happy with the portability. (Birch plywood seems lighter than other types.)

hahahahahaha aweeeeeessssome!!!!!! Thanks for sharing this and possibly making my day that much better!

I have no use for such a device at the moment, but I'm almost tempted to build one just because I have enough parts and pieces lying around I wouldn't even have to go to the hardware store. Wicked build.

Cheers,
Dave
