How the F35 Camera Dock Communicates - Unlocking the Missing Features

Seriously great work Viddo. You are a beast.

Is there any functionality with the hyperdeck shuttle 2?
I know there are quite a few of us on the shuttle...

I don't own a Hyperdeck Shuttle, so I have neither used one in my testing, nor specifically programmed with it in mind.

The Hyperdeck Shuttle supports SDI record triggers, so I expect it would work with the monitor out SDI trigger emulation mode. The downside to this is you have to use the monitor port, and can't put overlays on it.

From reading, it would seem the Hyperdeck Shuttle may be controllable via USB. USB can certainly be emulated by the sort of hardware I'm using. However, for specific technical reasons, I'm not sure the chip can both talk to the camera and manage a USB connection to the Shuttle at the same time. It might require a second chip.

Another approach would be to open the Hyperdeck up, and look for a method of intercepting the button pushes. Given the low cost of the Hyperdeck Shuttle, this isn't thoroughly impractical to explore.

Also - the rackmount Hyperdeck Studio units would work with this controller, as they have RS422 control.

What would all of you like? How much are these feature worth? How would you want it packaged? Would you need it to be switchable between different recorders? Which recorder would you use it with? Do you want the protocol information for your own projects? I'm happy to listen to ideas.

I think that the best would be to package it together with the IF-Box. Some kind of If-Box V2 that include the new hardware AND the audio connections. It could even bundled with other stuff like headphone jack with volume control, and may be TC-in and may be even 3G-SDI!
This of course only make sense for all of us with third party recorders because in case of SR-R1, it already provides most of these features.
But beside of SR-R1 and SRW1, a new IF-Box that allow communication with the camera would just be great for any external recorder.

It also makes sense in term of design. A new IF-Box could be better integrated with the design of the camera and even integrates on its back a V-Lock plate that, without external wires, feed the camera internally with power.

Unfortunately, as great as those features sound, many of them simply aren't feasible, and essentially would be a whole new project. The data communication signal I'm emulating is entirely separate from the SDI video stream data, and runs at a far slower rate. Audio inputs would need to be embedded onto the video stream, as would timecode. That's a completely different chip and coding project. And from the research I've done before, the development boards for HD-SDI DSPs are a minimum of $1,500 with many in the $5,000 range.

As for your V-mount power solution - it's not compatible with the VTR dock system. When the camera is powered by "CA" power through the dock, it absolutely, will not provide 12volt output over the dock. 12volt output for recorders is only available when the camera is powered from the 8pin LEMO power input.

Do you have multiple SR-R1's Viddo? What recorder will you be using now?

Right now I own two SRW-1/SRPC-1 sets, and two SR-R1 sets.

I ended up with that much gear for a couple reasons. One was that while a unit was opened up on my work bench for testing, it wasn't available for field work. Hence, having a second one on standby was very useful. Second, I got a couple great deals. As for the SR-R1, I also supplmented the number of media cards I have. I'm just selling the recorder, not the media cards.

So I'm still using an SR-R1 as my primary recorder, and I have a SRW-1 for ramping.

I had a feeling you had multiples! :-)

I'm really curious about the 12-bit...I've been pushing my grades and can see where the 10-bit starts to fall apart.
How often do you shoot in that mode?

Viddo you got any memory cards for sale?

The only way I would consider selling the memory cards is with the recorder. I'm guessing you want them for the F65. But honestly, my next step from the F35, if/when... could be an F65. so I'm trying to hold onto the media cards for now.

If I'm honest - not frequently. But that's determined by my clients.

In anycase, if you glance at my ebay list for sale, you'll figure out that I'm making some big changes.

More stuff to be posted shortly. Possibly a couple more items of interest to this forum.

Do it! You won't regret it.

So, someone on this forum private messaged and asked me if I was selling my F35. I've answered them privately, but I should go ahead and say it publically:

I don't plan on selling the F35. But I do need to make some moves to stay competitive in my market. That means at least one camera I own will need to be 4k. And to do that, I need to move some money around. If you look at my profile on eBay, you'll see I have over $30k listed to sell, but my F35 isn't part of it. I had two SR-R1 units and two SRW-1 units while I was engineering. But I don't need that redundancy anymore, so those items are being sold.

But I love the image on the F35. I don't currently plan on selling it.

But I will need a camera that does 4k, because I'm losing jobs where producers are making that a requirement.

I'm sure you've all seen the FS7 news. The F35 may be my personal camera for a very long time. But there are clients who need to hear "4k" to be wooed, and I can't afford to lose work on that basis as the cost of entry is now becoming so much lower.

So it goes.

We hear ya Viddo. If there was any way I could have kept my F35, I would have. I still look at the footage now and have a massive smile on my face.

Who knows, I might buy one again in the future to add to my museum.

Selling the F35 did allow me to indulge in something I'd been meaning to do for a long time though....

I've had a spare F35 front plate with PL mount, and it's now on eBay, perfect for those of you doing lens mods:
SOLD

Viddo how come you have so many things in double for F35?

Some of it was very intentional. When you're opening up the camera and sticking wires in it, having backup parts is handy.

Also, at one point I ran across an auction that had F35 parts for low prices, and I bought as many as I could.
