How soon would you expect a new AF100? Considering buying, but concerned

I am saving up for an AF100 and lots of supplemental equipment. I have been posting a lot of questions on this forum (sorry), and I have another.

I was going to buy the AF100 in Dec before I move next sept to LA. But, would it be wiser to wait until Sept to see what's on the market?

LA is where my resources are at the moment, so I won't have much use for the AF100 besides tests and etc while I'm not living there.

Would you guys reccomend just waiting until I move to see what's on the market?

Thanks for any input on this...I don't want to buy the AF100 to see the next model come out a few months after.

And even if they show the next model at NAB 2012, as with the AF100 originally, it will probably be close to the end of the year before they're actually shipping. I'd say the current model will still be the flagship in its category for at least a full year from now.

I dont know about you, but I couldn't live without a camera to shoot on. I wouldnt wait, or better yet, I couldn't wait. Only you know how bad your drive to shoot is. The way I see it, if your in this game, you need to shoot at least two or three times a week just to stay in tune with your craft. I say get IT ASAP.

Even if your only shooting for the fun of it, it's only going to benefit you in the long run.

That's the problem, I'm dying to use and shoot with it. I can't purchase it until december regardless, and I wont have the money for ALL the accessories until the end of the year (lenses, lighting, external monitor, etc).

Tough choice, but I'll probably end up purchasing it. Regardless if a new model is released, the AF100 will still be a viable/great option no matter what. For at least 3-4 years I'd hope.

I'd doubt you'd see any updated model before NAB 2012 in April.
There is absolutely zero possibility of there being any change to the AF100 being mentioned or announced for at least six months, and probably more like two or three years. The HVX200 was unmodified for three years, and the DVX100B stayed unmodified for, I think, four or maybe five years.

The AF100 is not even a year old yet.

Thanks, Barry. Reassures me on my purchase! I'm now very confused about editing off an external HD/what hd's to backup with ON the shoot. If that's even necessary. Unfortunately, I have a newer 15"macbook pro, so I don't have an express card slot.

I've been doing a lot of research, but I'm still confused what the best option would be. I'll probably post another thread, but I don't want to bog down the AF100 forum.

Why would you need an expresscard slot? All you need is a USB SDHC card reader. Anything with USB could accomodate that...

Barry, I was referring to editing off an external HD. I am going to backup in field to a 500gb external, or two possibly. But for editing at the fasted rate OFF an external Hd at home off an eSata drive I need to have an express card slot, so it looks like I'll be using firewire 800. But from what I've read it's perfectly ok with ProRes footage.

Also, since I'll have two backup versions of the footage, is it really necessary to edit off of some sort of Raid system? i was thinking just a fast 1tb Hd would work, and if it fails, I have the backups. I don't think I need a raid, what do you think?

get a used GH2 (or even a GH1) right now, start shooting on something. By the time you can afford the AF100 you could be a wizard.

I can afford the AF100 along with the Lumix 25mm f1.6 and the olympus 15-54 2.8. So, I'll probably just do that. Along with 4 32gb Sd cards, two extra batteries to start. The rest I have planned out to be purchased periodically (or all at once at the end of the year) up until October including lights, external monitor, and I'll need to get two back-up HD's and an edit HD.

So, I'm going to just do it. I was worried something would come out much sooner, but I guess it really is too early for that to happen, so I'm not going to worry about it. The AF100 will great for what I need to do.

Well I may be the only one giving you this advice, but I look at things from a business standpoint rather than an expensive hobby.

Don't purchase a camera if you don't have projects to shoot.
Wait till you make the move and have the need for the camera.

David, that's basically sound advice about thinking business-wise rather than hobby-wise, but it's not always possible to work like that. Most of us need to build up a portfolio/ showreel before we will be offered work, and also, there's a lot of paraphernalia to get, and get acquainted to in order to be a professional (among many other things, like skills development of course). Perhaps a GH1 or GH2 is a better camera for building a portfolio, but I'm sure having an AF100 would help me get work, or am I deluding myself?

Besides, as hobbys go, owning and using a nice camera rocks!
