How sketchy is craigslist!!!????

I am done with trying to sell video/film equipment over on craigslist in nyc.

After putting up my FCP Studio 2 package ad about a day ago I have received:

2 links to fake ebay ads (to confirm pricing) where they would try to steal my user name and password.

3 people wanting to only pay by personal check, who would need to pick up or have shipped FCS 2 before their check clears (because they are leaving the country).

Thank god (thor, odin, charles bronson, what have you) for DVXuser!!!

Please use this thread to post your CL selling and buying horror stories in an attempt to completely dissuade me from ever using CL in the future.

I heard of one TRUE story where the CL buyer set up a meeting at a local park to buy this guy's 17" mbp. Guess what ? he was ambushed, knocked out by 2 people and they took his mbp.

Moral of the story: Meet at a public place where there are lots of other people around.

That happened in NY recently I read....kids would lure dudes out who thought they were going to put a deposit and test drive a porche.

yeah i've had plenty of good dealings with CL, but i'm not in nyc either where things are a lot different. but usually when i post an ad i get a few scammers, but you can always tell them apart from the legit ones..

Hi,
I'm new here (long time lurker) and am looking to buy an XL2 or DVX. It's kind of funny that this thread popped up because I was using craigshelper to search through many cities at once and found a guy that was selling an xl2 for way too little but he had posted the ad through most of the US. Immediately I figured it was a scam. Like always, if it's too good to be true, it probably is.

I would never use CL (buying or selling) I mean just hanging around there for a few minutes gives me bad feelings. eBay all the way! Much safer.

ebay so royally sucks anymore that I would rather avoid it. I've had good dealings with CL but you do have to watch out for scammers. the last one I dealt with had a HVX with all the goodies for 3300 bux and was supposedly close enough that I could drive up there to pick it up. I offered and he said he'd left it with an ebay reseller because he was in hawaii on his honeymoon (second clue). finally after giving up on meeting and or seeing the equipment before I bought it I flagged his post as illegitimate.

check your email headers. his email was on a yahoo account but the headers showed he was coming from and AOL account. that in itself is soo sneaky I didn't want to deal with him. I persisted to see if I could get a meeting and or see the equipment....

Craigslist is only good for finding apartments...or desperate lonely people.

Excellent, I just happen to be in need of a desperate lonely female right about now....

Several friends of mine picked up full time jobs from CL and the place I used to work used it all the time to fill positions but I'd be leery of anything else on there. Seems like a good idea that like usual gets overrun by losers.

I just bought the Adobe cs3 complete package coupled magic bullet looks for next to nothing on CL. so I have a good experience, But people get jooked everyday before I would buy anything off of CL I would look into being educated on spotting scammers. Some of them are so clever and look so real they would fool anyone who does'nt know what to look for. and as far as meeting a stanger any where with thousands of dollars worth of gear? You are a dayum fool and may need to seek another profession.

I originally tried to sell my DVX100a on Craiglist. I was bombarded with nothing but flakes and yahoos. Based on phone conversations and emails, most seemed to be more lost in space than the Family Robinson.

Then I came to my senses and used the DVXuser Marketplace. Problem solved.

No matter what you do, get the cash first before you move the product.
