how much safe zone for tv?

shooting short film for television contest-. I plan to shoot in letterbox mode (can't afford anamorphic). In my tests, when I output to vhs and look at it on my tv, i don't see any part of the image being cut off. If this gets picked up and broadcast, will I lose some of the edges? Do I need to plan to shoot in safe zone, and if so, how much should I allow for that? Would it be better just to shoot in 4:3?

thanks all.

Re: how much safe zone for tv?

WHen letterboxing, you are preserving the vertical information as shot in the camera, but you may lose information on the sides - this is the difference between being in underscan or not. FOr 4:3, safe action is 10% from all sides, and safe title is another 10%. The same applies to true 16:9 work, but again, in your case you are preserving your full height by making it letterbox in a 4:3 world.

Also -

Most NLE's have a safe action/title grid you can apply to the video overlay to see those safety zones.
