how much RAM does Premiere Pro CS6 need???

as almost everybody suggested, i would also recommend spending your money on RAM, get a Nvida GTX for Mac at macvidcards ebay shop: http://www.ebay.de/sch/macvidcards/m.html

i have the GTX570 currently...

you'll be fine then, no need to spend that much money on a new mac pro - unless you need the 12 cores for CGI stuff or other heavy render projects - the GPU's built in the 2012 ones are pretty crappy too IMO...

a SSD will speed up just everything and a RAID system with fast drives will give you a little more speed, instant backup and cheap space for your footage.

Then he would have to buy ALL of his software again. Out of my 9 or 10 Macs, only one has ever died. Out of all my 5 or 6 PC's, all of them have died. Some bang for the buck. But let's stop the PC v MAC right here and now. Yes, you can get a mighty PC for the $.
The OP has a five year old computer that would still run great if he adds some RAM and a new graphics card. "FIVE YEARS OLD" Or he can take that money and get an iMac, transfer all his software over to it and enjoy the speed the new Imac has and not worry about buying all his software again.
And why is that? You made a biased anecdotal comment and then declared the issue over with your "stop right here and now" dictum. That sounds a bit like Lois Lerner making her "I'm innocent" testimony and then hiding behind the Fifth Ammendment. The "best" computer to use is the one that suits an individual's overall needs and personal preferences. Both platforms are "good". I am so weary of either side of this hatching this obviously contrived anecdotal evidence to 'prove' their biased position. It reminds me when I was in elementary school listening to little kids argue about whether a Ford or Chevrolet was better based on which their fathers' owned.

i can't help but recall my favorite argument of ineptitude with a girl who made the statement "i'm a computer science major, do you really want to argue with me on this?" which was the tail end of an argument just a few years ago before final cut shot itself in the foot and the masses of FCP fanboys would declare anything else 'amateur'. she made the statement that you cannot edit over USB, and at that time i had been usb extensively for editing on premiere with no qualms... so the story went...

her-You can't edit overUSB, you need firewire, USB will just freeze up in Final Cut.
me-Odd, I've neveractually never had a problem, but then I've never tried it on FinalCut.
her-We'll what do you editon?
me-Premiere.
her-Oh,(smiling snarkily)well that's an amateur program.
me-Sooo..... an amateurprogram that doesn't freeze, while you're final cut does?
her-No, USB can't keep upwith final cut, it's not fast enough, firewire is faster
me- so what you're saying, is that with the same USB drive, with the same HD file, in final cut it freezes, and in premiere itdoesn't, and you're saying the one that freezes is better?...
her- Final cut is smarter, faster, usb is too slow to keep up, I'm a computer science major doyou really want to argue with me on this?
me- Actually, yes.

there is 1 "rule" the minimum ram amount = 1 core x 2 GB! its a minimum for normal work. so if u have 2CPUs with 4 core each... 8x2gb = 16GB RAM minimum, if u cant get it why would u buy 2 xeon system?

for video editing get double or even triple of that..

the GPU that you mentioned (ATI hd4870 512mb) - i would say u have no GPU, dont even try to sell it....give it to charity and hope they will not be offended :-) !
Get a good GTX card with lots of cuda , dont even bother with quadro..... if u need 10bit out, get extra card - black magic, cheap and simple. also in case if u need 10bit out make sure your OS supports 10bit, only latest mac os support 10bit

but what other told is true - your pc is very dated.... and u r very limited , no thunderbolt , probably no usb 3, no PCI 3.0, the engine is old as well, and newer mother boards work better with SSD hard drives

im on an 8 core mac 2.93ghz with 32 gigs of ram. i used to have the ati 5870 1 gig card and its worthless in premiere 6 but in CC it actually works ok although you dont get very far as a few plugs with tear thru that measly 1gig. i bought a flashed GTX 680 (4 gigs) for $639.00 and premiere seriously kicks ass now. also davinci resolve v9 is screaming too. endless nodes and still cruising happily.

today the new macpro's were offically announced and set to ship in december so thats an option going forward if you want to stay mac. still the baseline is $3k. for 4k you get a 6 core. probably to get one more tricked out your talking 5-6k and more if your wanted the most power.

still i have absolutely no problem with my 2009 8 core with the GTX 680 loaded. the GPU was the most decisive element that was necessary to get it to work great in PP and resolve.

also firewire has been working fine just like it worked fine before thunderbolt showed up so im not a huge advocate in the immediate need for thunderbolt if your working with 1080 footage. one of my computers i use has a sata card but on other computers i work on its still firewire 800 and its never a problem. of course we all will be in thunderbolt land eventually but i dont see a rush to it just because its there...unless of course you opt for the new Mac Pro or an iMac then your forced to use it...although you can always get a converter to get from TB to firewire until you feel the need to start going TB.

btw, what could speed up some of the things on such an old pc.... as i understand there are no SATA 3.0 or USB 3.0.... is PCI card like that : True USB 3.0 & True SATA 6Gb/s - crazy cheap, a must have! proven - it really works!
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/U3S6/

that particular card is for windows only, but i am sure same kind of cards should exist and for MACs

i use Sandisk CF 90Mb/s cards, and with USB 2 the download speed was around 20mb/s, but with that U3S6 card i get 90 .... its a huge difference when downloading 32 GB!
So USB 3.0 raids could be used

also with SATA III - u can ran Sata 3.0 SSD disks like Samsung 840Pro 128GB or 256GB - seems like best on consumer market now! System loads very fast on a drive like that, + again u can use it for external SATA 3.0 RAID.

so with the system like that this is what i would do:

1. RAM - get 32 GB ram - ddr2 is cheap
2. GPU - Evga GTX video card that u could afford
3. pci card with usb 3 and sata 3, with SSD disk as system drive
