You Charge what you are worth and what the client is willing to pay depending on depth (special effect and processing) and your experience (with more experience you are faster and can charge more money). Personally, I charge 110 Volts except in Europe where I charge at 220. Carl Marxx

I edit for free for Uncle Tony.

But for clients it always is a tough assessment based upon my experience, and client's budget.

There's also the matter of efficiency, I'm not sure I'd ever pay an editor by the hour. Otherwise, there's zero motivation to do it with any speed.

Couldn't the same be said about any profession where you pay by the hour/day/week? A motivation to work efficiently is to keep the client happy so you get repeat business and word of mouth referrals. Personally I'm weary of project rates and annual salaries because then the client/employer is in a position to squeeze more hours out of the worker w/o having to worry about additional compensation.

I charge $80 an hour under 4 hours.

1/2 day = $500
Full day = $1,000

Depends on the project too because I might just give someone a flat rate that would include shooting and editing.
