How much faster would a G5 be for me?

Re: How much faster would a G5 be for me?

Random thought . . .

If Apple made its software available for the PC (and I mean for real, not chumped-out versions) . . .

It would sell a lot more software.

But would probably sell a lot fewer computers.

Re: How much faster would a G5 be for me?

i went to newegg.com and created a dual 3ghz xeon system with the same specs as the d2.5ghz g5, and it ended up being $1950 (without liquid cooling or any cooling for that matter). Relative to the 2700 (edu discount) price of the g5, i guess its not bad. then again, its a homebuilt computer so in my case unstable. I'd need to get the adobe video bundle for the pc to get the dvd software and music software (doesnt it even bring it?) for 500.
Id rather pay the extra 700 + 500 (production bundle edu discount) for the g5.

Re: How much faster would a G5 be for me?

I love the Mac and I also love the PC.
I personally, don't really care if a Mac is faster than the PC, or the PC is faster than the MAC. Just learn to be creative with what you already have. As far as I'm concern, my commadore 64 beats both platforms. :)

... and Batman beats your commadore, after disposing of spiderman's corpse...

??? You can do it for less than $1500 at zipzoomfly.com.

David-
how dependable are these guys? Do you order stuff from them? Let check that ratings thing.

Re: How much faster would a G5 be for me?

I order stuff from them all the time. Thousands worth. Can't beat the free two-day shipping!

Re: How much faster would a G5 be for me?

About FCP rendering, I rarely have to render unless I'm throwing some pretty heavy effects. Realtime preview really shines on my Dual G4. On the other hand, Vegas realtime directx engine makes hard to corrctly see some effects as transitions, sometimes they play choppy. So there you have it, advantages and disadvantages, we can all feel free to buy the one we like the best.

Good Luck

Re: How much faster would a G5 be for me?

Taub, what are you talking about, maybe it's because i was using a school version with 700 mhz processors, but when I look at an individual grab which im trying to color correct or whatever, after i apply the color correction, it will appear as "UNRENDERED" in the window... then I have to render to see the changes...

Re: How much faster would a G5 be for me?

I have a dual P4 3.2 ghz. running P.P. 1.5. It doesn't seem very fast. Is the G5 dual much different running FCP HD?

Re: How much faster would a G5 be for me?

I use FCP HD on a Power Mac G5 dual 2ghz. I don't have to render anymore. Ahhhhh what bliss. All my effects and such play realtime without rendering. Before that I was using FCP HD on a dual G4 and most of my effects played without rendering. Only a small handfull had to be rendered everytime I made a change to them. That I did hate. Noting wastes more time than to have to render to view.

Re: How much faster would a G5 be for me?

I've never had success at Ppro being fast on any system that I own. Right now I am running Vegas on a P4 2.4Ghz 1gig of ram desktop with dual monitors, and for in the field work an AMD 64 3200 with 1gig of ram, 15.4in wide screen, and I rarely have to render effects. Vegas just works on any system, and the realtime preview is the best I've seen on any (no hardware supported) system. Sure I could run Ppro with a matrox card for an additional $600, but say goodbuy to 24p editing, and when I already get the performance that I do with the equipment that I have, I can't see why anyone would want to do that.

Re: How much faster would a G5 be for me?

If you have $5Gs to spend... that can get you a Dual G5, 2gigs of RAM, some hard drive space, then get the Mac w/ Final Cut Pro. You can get that... DVD Studio Pro, and motion for $1300.00.

Mac's aren't cheap... but at least you know when you buy a MAC, using those software's I mentioned above, chances are, the software will streamline nicely and that functionality will be extremely stable.

If you don't have the $5Gs, upgrade the RAM on your PC.

Also about FCP, you don't have to render "every" effect. Just the complex ones. On a G5 though.. takes a moment of seconds. Depends what system you have and what user setup preferences you are using. People seem to ignore that step alot.

Re: How much faster would a G5 be for me?

Also, those few seconds of rendering do add up... but they don't add up to the amount of time my Avid crashed or rebooted to blue screen.

Re: How much faster would a G5 be for me?

I think Mac's are neat, and if you have a fast enough computer, you can do most stuff without rendering which is pretty nice.

Re: How much faster would a G5 be for me?

OSX might be worth the extra cost of the Mac. 50,000 known viruses for PC vs. 50 for Mac (OS 1-9) and NO known virus for OSX. Whenever anything even looks like a potential vulnerability, Apple issues an automatic Software Update preemptively to stop it before it ever develops into a real security threat. I know PC-based videographers who intentionally keep their main system "offline" from the internet (except for software patches/updates) and use a second clunker system for web and email to keep virus-related downtime to a bare minimum.

Being among the 5% of the computing public who are Mac users has its advantages.

Up front costs will always be higher, though. But how expensive is downtime to a working studio?

hmm. I still have to render. Even so, it can be pretty fast. Add something like magic bullet filters..it can take awhile..

Maybe you have to configure RT extreme, I'm not sure how to do that, but you could get some pointers at www.kenstone.net

I'm only asked to render on my third layer of CC 3-way, and that's in a machine with only 512MB RAM...
