How much did you spend?

How much money did you spend on your filmmaking equipment? cameras, lighting, sound equip, filters, etc?

Looking to get some of my own equipment, but finding the prices to be extremely high. I see people on here talking about by P2 cards over 1000, software suites that are close to a thousand, cameras that are over 5000, and wonder how they can afford these things! Anyways, how much have you spent so far?

I've spent over $5k this year, and I've owned my camera since 04 and haven't even got into real lights. That is just a few minor PC upgrades, sound, cases, tripods, shoulder mount, on camera lights, tape, and other odds and ends.

But hey, ya gotta start somewhere. Get what you can and add when you have the cash.

$5000 total for all of my equipment... I managed to get a lot of software free (friends dad is a high-up position at the academic super-store).

I started by spending 5 grand, but that was just a start (camera, tripod, a few lights). I've spent a bit since then.

I plan on buying a camera/various equipment in February. With what I'm spending from now to then it'll add up to around $4600. I'm getting it from B&H with a "don't pay for 6 months plan", and using the money from army reserve training to cover it.

Speaking of which, has anyone gone with this payment route?

About $7000 over the past year and a half, mostly on equipments. Editing off of my friend's PC that he built for gaming. Getting ready to blow another $500-1000 in the next few months. Mostly a lot of saving up here and there with the occasional videography jobs and some fund raising activities.

I didn't spend a whole lot to the rest of you, by comparison. For my number one computer (I have two I do work on, one just for audio) I bought a case, Asus motherboard, duel core CPU, power supply, two Seagate Barracuda 250 gig hard drives in RAID, 2 gigs or Corsair DDR memory, graphics card (Nvidia 6800 Ultra+) for 900. I had a friend who was dumping his old system (not old by my standards, but old by his, which is just fine by me) and turning that into my main computer. The secondary computer was basically free, since I just pulled parts from the old system and put a new one together, not counting the 360 megs of hard drive storage for which I paid around $150 (two drives).

I spent 700 on duel 19" Dell Ultrasharps, another 400 for my speaker system (Logitec z550's, and yes, I know they are not pro audio), and that's about it for the main system.

I also bout a Zoom H4 Handy for 280, and Oktiva Mk012, an AKG Perception 200, and a pop filter.

I have two Sure lav sets, two Audio technica hanging mics, 4 750 watt fresnels, 3 halogens, one diffuse (All with tripods, barn doors, top hats, gels, bounces, and gel holders), a Mackie CVX-12 mixing board, two Photogenic 1250 Powerlights, four 50 mm Nikor 1.8 lenses, for a whopping total of 150 bucks, and yes, I wrote that correctly.

Two Canon GL2s and a Canon GL1 for 500, a Nikon D70 with kit lenses for 300.

Plus three Bogen 503's with sticks for the cost of only the heads, a 501, again for the cost of the head.

Plus a set of Polk Monitor 30's, and PSW10 sub for 200 for my audio computer.

Yes, I got one hell of a deal on everything in the fourth paragraph. More than a good deal, but the school I taught at was closing, they had never been used, so I made an offer. THe idiots, not knowing what they had (of course I did) told me I could clean out the whole AV 2nd room's storage for $150. Ha!

Plus the DVX 100a with a couple of Tiffen filters (UV and Circular polarizer) and a remote zoom. All at market price.

So, I got a hell of a lot, for not a hell of a lot.

Yeah me!

Ha. Ha ha. Hahahahahahahahahahah! Like I'd ever put down a concrete number for that. If my wife knew -- oy. Started with the DVX (used @ $2400 almost 3 years ago) and exploded from there. Though not on Timur's level. But I think he actually does this for a living. Bastard. I mean, good for him.

Somewhere to the tune of $30,000+ in the past 3 years or so, between equipment, training, and strictly video related travel investments (trade-shows basically).

And I don't own a video camera.
