I've read of people flying to their locations, paying for permits, having their score professionally composed in far away countries (ahem, *caughs - JOHN HUDSON!*), etc.

Just looking for a guage of how much people are investing in their short films?

I've not tallied up the receipts yet, and I've got some unused FX make up I can take back, so I'm guessing my total expenditures (this includes some cheap work lights I can use again in the future, cloth backdrops, etc.) are no more than $300-$400. Actual money spent for this film alone, and can't be used on any others, is probably less than $150.
 
$250-500, not including the new set of Briteks. Mostly on props, costumes, tapes, fx makeup and gas.
 
the only money i've spent on mine so far is red bull and mcdonald's. i used a leftover 83 min tape my video teacher gave me. he also had a bunch of busted mic cables he didn't want to fix, so i resoldered all of them: free cables! the camera i'm using i checked out from my high school for the summer along with an audio-technica shotgun mic and tripod.
 
Most of money went to food, but I spent a lot of money on softwares, but that doesn't really count cos I could use all that for whatever next project (and beyond) would be.
 
I'm in the $1-$250 range. I haven't had to lay out any real money on this. Just the normal booze costs associated with editing.:beer:

Theft of a new tape from a friend (and the giggles that followed)- $0

Location grant- $0

Hiring semi-professional actor who's friends with the family- $0

Bag of Sun Chips and some Vault to eat/drink on the set and not share- $4.65

Making a zombie film- Priceless.
 
Well with how much gas is costing now, I can adjust the money spent and say we spent about $250,000.99.

If you want to look at actual receipts just with makeup, food, transportation, tape, drinks, location I think the total comes to under $100. Experience was priceless though!
 
Man... I feel bad saying that my estimates are between $400 and $500... The obvious question, after you see what I have, will be FOR WHAT?

I drove to scout a location, check it again... secure it... then shoot two days... then completely DUMP that two days and start over... then shoot two more days... and I gotta' go back. Each and every trip is about 100 miles round trip... So I'm at two full tanks of gas right there... at 26 gallons per fill-up.

Every time I went to meet everybody I brought whatever food and beverages I could come up with... so at least $20 per visit.

Then of course tapes...

The next issue was problem solving items that if I explain will give away which crappy film is the one I did... but let's just say I'll be writing a couple threads about problem solving as soon as the deadline passes... because a lot of things about film production started making more sense then they ever did as I encountered a couple of "issues".

Makeup and latex was around $90... maybe more?

Yeah, I'm for SURE over $400... and maybe over $500... it's hard to say.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but this has been way more fun then I thought it would be... when you see my bloopers and behind the scenes stuff I hope it's as funny replayed as it was being there. I'd love to post a little clip and explain what you see happening... because even if it makes it in the final edit you won't realize what you're seeing when this one kid gets "rocked".

I guess I can't really explain what that means just yet, but the gist is I kept urging people to back it off a notch 'cause somebody was due to get hurt... and nobody listened.

We didn't have any REAL injuries... but I found out how hard it is to hold the camera steady when you're cringing.

Well I used guild actors, so I don't really want to think about how much I have spent. None the less, its been a fun experience!
 
I've spent actually NOTHING on actual production rentals/fees/gear--BUT . . .

Aside from what I'm paying my actors, I've spent the most by far on wardrobe. I bought three sets of EVERYTHING for two actors (Ross is a GREAT place to buy wardrobe!). Spent some money on props (which were mainly wardrobe accessories). Two quarts of Karo syrup and a gallon of red food coloring. I have not used one professional light on this shoot yet. Just some flourescent desk lamps and some battery-powered flourescent hand-held lights.

I'm paying one actor $50 for two nights' work. Another actor (who's actually another cameraman), I just took out to dinner to a trendy Hollywood restaurant for dinner (Sharon Stone and Dennis Hopper were there) for two nights' work ($150 for the three of us, AND I made him pay the $30 tip), PLUS, he has to shoot the behind-the-scenes video. And the special make-up effects artist I promised $100 for one night's work. I bought my girlfriend $170 worth of new clothes for being in the short (this was more of a bribe . . . or was it extortion?).
 
Hrm, i bought my makeup person (fiance) a sirius radio unit with car kit.
i wonder if i'm over 1K now...
 
Wow. Okay well, I have not received the complete $$$ breakdown from the other producers but I would guess we are about $1000 or there abouts anyway.
 
I hope we can come up with some other idea pretty soon after this contest to keep this absolute MANIA going...

I'm even starting to like the horror genre... and I never cared much for it before.
 
Wow, I'm the only one sho spent more than $1,000. Oh well.

A lot of it went to feeding 21 cast/ crew 3 meals a day for 3 days.
 
Between covering crafty and top-notch meals (our producer did a batch of home-made lasagne one night - I thought the whole cast and crew was going to turn on me even suggesting that "we were back" on the set before they licked the pans clean!); our EXTREMELY creative SFX guy, forking out a couple hundred to a friend that does audio (added insurance, you might say), wardrobe for the zombie and miscellaneous props, I think we're in the neighborhood of about $1,000, give or take a bit.

Not bad I guess, considering the excitement this contest has generated.
