Before I hook up my hard drive I was wondering how many MB does a 1 hour mini dv tape equal. I have four tapes that need to go onto a drive. Anyone know ? I think I have about 15-20 mb on this drive that is available.

Mini DV
...The better known MiniDV "S" cassettes are 65 × 48 × 12 mm and hold either 60 or 90 minutes of video (13 or 19.5 GB) depending on whether the video is recorded at Standard Play (SP) or Extended Play (sometimes called Long Play) (EP/LP).

Right. Standard def NTSC DV, with embedded 48k/16 bit stereo audio runs approximately 3.61 MB/second. So an hour (3.61 MB x 360 seconds) equals 12.996 GB. Close enough to 13!

Zak's calculator is off a bit (13.64 GB/hour), evidently because it's adding in the audio as a separate stream.

I think it's off because he has an inadvertent 4x multiplier at the bottom of the Kona test calculator.

No, that resulted in the 54.55 GB number for four hours. Divided by four, it's 13.64, which is high by approximately what the audio alone would represent.
