how many hours should be on the dvx100b when you buy it

o.k so I finally buy the camera of my dreams and after having logged about
three hours of tape I finally check the camera setting that tells you how many hours the camera has been used for recording and lo and behold it reads 12 hours.
This obviously does not add up. Does Panasonic when they do quality control put
any hours on the camera to test it or does the camera come with 0 hours logged.
If it comes with 0 hours I suspect that this camera was used( Bought and returned) before I got it. Right?

Did you shoot 3 hours of actual tape time, i.e. 3 - 60minute tapes?
If so, you probably had the camera in "pause" for a good bit while shooting, setting up for the next shot, etc...
The camera logs time anytime the video heads are spinning whether or not the tape is rolling.

I recorded three tapes all the way through I used the camera as a deck for a little bit.I put it on pause but not to many times and still I don't think it adds up to 12 hours. I would have the camera on but not recording and work through the functionality of each setting. I did take tapes in and out of the cassette look at them put it back in Maybe it read it each time but that doesn't make sense either.

I bought my DVX100A from B&H and if I remember correctly it had 2 hours on it when I first got it. Hopefully that was time from the factory. Add 3 tapes to that and I'm already at 5 hours. Then add up the time in pause, the time you used it as a deck and I could see it adding up to 12 before you know it.

When I bought my 100A in 2004, it had zero hours on the meter. Same thing when I bought my 100B two weeks ago. I don't think that in-factory quality controls involve running the cams for any number of hours. It would be a considerable waste of time and resources.

I may be wrong but I'd be suspicious of any cam that has anything more than zero hours on the meter, however "factory-sealed" the package may look.

FYI:

I bought mine USED from B&H.

It had been used often as a studio capture camera for an FX house , and was never put into RECORD MODE....and IT had ZERO hours!!
