How many channels of audio does each xlr input receive?

I looked up the specs and this is what I saw, Audio Signal Format16 bit/48kHz Four Channels.

So doees that mean each xlr input gives you a left and right channel? I am a bit confused.

I plan on recording my audio with an external shotgun mic via xlr. I will connect that mic to one xlr input on the hvx. When I take that to edit, will I have a left and right, or 2 channels of audio or do I need to feed the hvx 2 different shotgun mics and use both xlr inputs?

Thanks.

The short answer is 1 channel of analog audio for each XLR connector.
(If the HVX had digital audio inputs, you could get 2 channels of digital
audio on one XLR, but the HVX does not have digital audio inputs.)

The four HVX channels are: two built-in mics which end up on tracks 3 & 4,
and two XLR connectors which usually end up on tracks 1 & 2.

If you have one shotgun plugged into XLR connector 1, then you will have
nothing on track two. When you import into FCP, just select all your clips,
and use the import settings tab to turn off any of the four tracks you're not
using. When mixing, assign the shotgun channel to be panned center.

A nice way to do things would be to have a shotgun in XLR 1, a wireless
lapel mic or some other mixer feed in XLR 2, and use the built-in mics
as room/backup/reference. The built-ins don't sound great.

By the way, the mic preamps in the HVX can be quite noisy,
so plan accordingly.
