how loud (db) for most acceptable sound?

I'm working in FCP 6 / STP,

just wondering what the best / most professional audio volume settings I should be levelling the tracks at.

example, dialogue should hit...what? around -15db (in FCP's audio volume bar) ?

and is there any audio filter in FCP or STP that works like "mastering" the sound, making sure it's all within range and wouldn't destroy anyone's speakers nor sound too quite/ dull ?
(assuming the audio was recorded properly in the first place, which I believe it was)

Thanks in advance

It really depends on what you're mixing for. TV? Theatrical release? Straight to DVD? Internet? They all have different standards (or lack thereof).

Start with this sticky: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=174562

There is no single audio filter/plug-in that will master your sound for you. Yes, there are some (not included in FCP), that contain all the typical tools of a mastering suite (compression, EQ, limiting), but even those don't just do it for you. There's a lot that goes into a final mix.

Thanks for the replies,

I'll look into the info found in the sticky. -12db sounds about right from what I remember reading a while (about a year) ago...

It's planned for DVD and festivals...well, so theater I suppose.
