How is compositing with the sony HD vs dvx?

I am going to be making a Sci-Fi movie with alot of compositing.  I was excited to hear of the FX1 but when I found out it compressed the 1080i to mpeg2 I looked at the agdvx-100a. Does anyone know with the pro version, I have read good things about the 25p and deinterlacing the footage.  Will this give me a cleaner key then the dvx??? or should I be looking into the rumor of a panasonic hd camecorder?  I want a film look but it is going to dvd.  Even though you downconvert the diffrence in hd is noticable.

Re: compressed How is composting with the sony HD?

The DVX100a is not uncompressed ... it records to miniDV with a 4:1:1 compression. For any type of green screen work, I would try to shoot in a higher format if possible. Otherwise, it is possible to get results from DV, but it involves work. As for the FX1, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe its color compression is 4:2:0. I'm not too sure how that affects compositing work ... I'm sure someone else can answer.

Hope this helps,

yes but it is still an mpeg compression even if the color space is 4:2:0. Now I havn't done any greenscreen work with the fx1/z1 but I would assume that it would not be any better than dv, if anything it would be worse, even if it is higher resolution, you are still working with the same amount of information ie. 25mbps.

Good one Michael.

with the right grower, and strong fertilizer anything is possible.

Well DV is not the best to do composting with, but that aside it can be done.
I would rent the Sony, shoot and digitize some greenscreen shots, and test compost. That will give you the answer.

Try a couple of different composting tools, like combustion or Shake, as both of these tools have great keyers and toolset.

Happy Gardening.

I think Michael , like myself, may have thought the term was "composite" or "compositing", but even at my advanced age, I am still learning.

As an ILM compositor I would say that the number of pixels will help a lot. Nothing hides mistakes like donwconversion. Just look at any movie that you thought had bad effects in the theatre on DVD and you'll know what I mean.
You probably want to shoot cineframe and comp in a progressive format.
I'm happy to help with a quick question.
Good luck,
Sam

Sam if you have a Sony it would be great to see some tests.

ILM uses a propreitary compositing too I think...eh?

Hi Taylor,
I use proprietary and off the shelf tools. Don't know how much detail I can go into re: ILM's pipeline. Personally I love ultimatte and keylight for Blue/Green screens.
Been meaning to do a test witth my own images soon.
Cheers,
Sam
