How high quality do you need to go w/memory cards? + one question about wide lenses

Hey,

So I've ordered my D90, woo!, it should come Tuesday, super excited. I'm one from the Sony Ex1 + Letus Extreme camp so looking forwards to carrying something lighter!

That being said, I have a question or two if I may.

I've been looking at SDHC memory cards to buy and would prefer to shoot one of decent capacity, pref 16gb as I shoot a lot of bands so it'd be good to have, if nothing else, the potential capacity to shoot a whole set or two (if multiple bands on the bill).

That being said I see a massive discrepancy in prices, so much so that I've no idea what I actually need - I've read the D90 has a data transfer rate of less than 2mb sec when video. However I do want to do some burst stills shooting, the 4.5 per sec jobby, which suggests it'd be good to have the buffer for that too.

Take this for example - http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/3583118/Play-com-16GB-SD-HC-Memory-Card/Product.html?cm_mmc=Froogle-_-Electronics-_-Memory+Cards-_-Play.com%2B16GB%2BSD%2BHC%2BMemory%2BCard&source=5065&engine=froogle_electronics&keyword=Play.com+16GB+SD+HC+Memory+Card - £16 quid for a 16 gb card seems great, but will it be too slow for transfer?

This for example is double the price for a 'named' brand - http://www.lowpricememory.co.uk/Sandisk-16gb-video-SDHC-Memory-Card.html

And then there's the 16gb Ultra III's that cost £100!

Money is a bit of an issue in that I'm not rich, heh, so would prefer to be able to cut corners where I can! Thanks a lot for any suggestions!

Also, I have one question about lenses.

I currently have three lenses, a 50mm 1.4, 105mm f2.8 and a cheap 70-210ish f4 zoom.

I'm looking to get a wide angle lens but I want some control over DoF with it. A few months ago I worked on a short for a friend shot by a great dop who normally does films, we used an Ex1 and Letus with Zeiss movie lenses. This dop really loved the 18mm lens, and apparently used an 18mm lens almost exclusively on the film franchise he worked on, here's some sample images from it.

Note - these were uploaded by a mate to facebook so they're low res and in the wrong aspect, they should be widescreen w/2.35 crop but they were added as 4x3 so they're squished!:

These aren't the best images to show what I mean, but what I really liked about the shots is that the dop had a nice roll off of focus. Moreover, he had control of focus throughout the image.

In the sales last month I bought a Sigma 20mm f1.8 and took it back within a few days. It simply didn't give me focus control through the depth of the image, in essence I had control from zero to 2 foot, but beyond that nothing.

Therefore, I was wondering if anyone could recommend me a lens that will keep focus throughout the image, in other words, that will let me focus on something a foot, a few feet, and even more in the background, essentially to be able to rack some focus and not just have everything in focus!

I was wondering what's the widest lens people could recommend that would give me this control. The 20mm was evidently too wide with the Nikon range wheras it was better with the Zeiss lens, but I wanted to know at what MM I will get this focus control.

Many and much appreciated thanks!

EDIT - I thought of another question! I intend to output a 16x9 widescreen video but with a crop to 2.35 as I really like the look, at the moment at least. I was wondering if anyone knows a good way to mask for this aspect? I'm ok with just giving a bit of headroom, but personally I like to be more exact if possible and would like to mask for 2.35 if possible.

Well, the only thing I've thought of is to mask the footage in post and then, using that as visual reference, tape 2.35:1 bars onto the plastic protector covering the LCD to match the image on screen with the one left on the camera. That would technically give you a visual indicator of 2.35:1 framing with the D90. Then, if you want to check and make sure you have some head and toe room, you can just pop the LCD protector off and look at the bare LCD.

As for your question about SDHC cards...

I've been using the Transcend 16 GB cards with no problems shooting or transferring. Here's a link to Amazon with a price of USD$35.92. It includes a very usable USB reader that takes cards on the side. The USB readers that take the card in the end are wider and sometimes won't fit on the slots of a laptop if anything else is plugged in next to them.

The most important thing is that it's a Class 6 rated card.

I'm still looking for the right wide angle lens myself.

As for the 2.35 - it depends on your post production work flow. You can mask in most editors and some 3rd party transcoders will let you crop, zoom, etc. when you convert from your master render to an online format.

One way to add a 2.35 mask to an entire project with FCP is to edit as normal. Then create a second sequence and drop the first sequence into it as a nested sequence (just drag it in). Drag the Wide Screen filter from the Matte group on the nested sequence. Option-click the nested sequence to open it in the Viewer and choose 2.35 from the Wide Screen filter options.

Dof is an optical /mathematical property that depends on the f-stop and focal length. If everything is in focus on the sigma it will be on any 18/1.8 lens. /matt

Hey, thanks a lot for the replies, I am really grateful for everyone's opinions!

I have one or two follow ups:

Re memory cards - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Transcend-1...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1234177890&sr=1-1

This is the amazon uk version which is cool so I shall get that!

Re masking for 2.35 - aye that's what I do for my Ex1 - I have a little bit of tape on the screen, v. thin, that just lets me know where the boundaries are. That being said I was curious as to if there was a better method, perhaps in the menu's etc. I know that when I was doing the Ex1 I set the safety boundaries to 80% and that gave me the top and bottom lines for the mask, I was wondering if there was something similar for the D90.
