How good is Vegas?

Chenopup > Thanks. I was asking this because DVDA 4.5 had some bugs with importing surround sound audio from vegas 8 pro etc. Will i be ok importing 5.1 sound from Vegas 8 Pro into DVDA 4.0 ?

Up until last week, I was editing on a dual core E6600 machine and a 24" Dell monitor. I sold them and started using my Sony Laptop to edit, Model number VGN-FZ340E. It's a newer dual core laptop with 3 gigs of ram and a 250GB hard drive. I also use 2 Western Digital Mybook 1TB drives, reformatted NTFS, and I couldn't be happier. I edit HD content (Mainly 720p) straight from the drives via USB and it works beautifuly. The system is fast and I actually like it better than editing on my 24" because it takes less time to get to everything and I can stick my whole editing system in my backpack. The 24" is great if you have a ton of tracks on your timeline, but most of my stuff usually involves only a few video tracks and a couple of audio tracks.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to pick up a dual quad core system with dual 30" monitors, but this way works great for editing 99% of my stuff and I can do it from anywhere, not tied down to my office. I edit about 15 projects a week, 50% of them are 30 second commercials, the other stuff is hour + live shows and Interview / Documentary / Education videos.

Also, I don't know if anyone else goes this route, but I use Vegas and go to Adobe Encore 3 for my authoring. I like the workflow of Encore more than I like that of DVD Architect for some reason. I also use Photoshop for all of my graphics and the whole system integrates wonderfully.

I use to edit on my laptop all day but my neck and back started to feel it. I started to miss my dual 20" NEC setup. I just can't find a laptop monitor that comes close to the 20WMGX color.

I just downloaded Sony Vegas and Edius trial copies. I haven't really had the time to evaluate both app's but I am wondering if users may be able to enlighten me by comparing the two. Edius cost more but I am leaving the cost factor out of the equation for now. I have edited for years using Avid Liquid but since Avid killed it I am looking for the best alternate (I am not interested in any Avid product...I'll stay away from this company).
I do documentary type work and shoot HD.

From what I understand with Vegas Pro 8 I will need to get raylight to import the P2 card. A friend of mine is getting the EX1. He has Vegas 6 but will be upgrading it to Vegas Pro 8 and he doesn't think he will need raylight to transfer his footage from the SxS card. Is this true?

Yes it is true. Vegas Pro 8 will edit the EX-1 files naively.

Vegas All the way. Nothing can touch it for price, quality, easy use, and capabilities! It's the way to go! Unless you must feel the need to follow the zombies just because THEY ARE ALL DOING IT! Then get a Mac and go FCP. You can be cool just like them! And only 1 button on your mouse!

Does the Vegas pro 8 have any problems working with 1080i 24pa from the HVX200a P2 Card?

I edited a short shot 1080i24pA from an HVX a few months ago on version 7 and it was a breeze, so I would guess version 8 Pro would be the same or better.

Also, although 8 edits EX material naively (or so I have heard), you can edit EX shot material in erlier versions of Vegas by getting a free transfer program from Sony (download) which unwraps the .mp4 files into .mxf files just like regular XDcamHD.

It's nearly 100% customizable -- you can conform it to how you want to work in almost any way. If you don't like the way it looks when you first open it (few do), change it.

You just have to empty your mind of Avid

You just have to empty your mind of Avid

like thinking, when I first opened it, I got real frustrated real fast, like all I wanted to do was simple edits and confusion. The whole AB thing

But read the manual, go online and there's heaps of tutorials, and I got the VASST training DVDs which I can highly recommend and you get up to speed really quick, and can never figure out how you edited before.

I would have to say I'm still extremely frustrated with the so called pro titler thats buggy as anything, you'll definitley need plug-ins here, and I haven't worked with it yet, but would like to know how it handles 4:2:2 material at high bit rates, anyone on the forum done so effectivley?

cheers

Adam

Is it best to drag and drop or is there a way to just import your film from Project Media folder onto the time line?

I would have one clip in my Project Media Flolder and when I drag it down to the time line it would turn into three clips, is this the norm?

I'm shooting 1080i 24pa - do I need to do anything in my Vegas for this setting or does it do it auto?

I'm going to add another plug for Vegas! I was a Premiere user on the PC for a long time (back with a Pinnacle DV500 and before), and it really seemed to crash or cause problems rather than helping me get my edits completed in a timely and reasonable manner. I used Vegas after that, and it was so much better of an experience.

After that, I had to do some editing of DVCPRO50 footage, and my only options were either the Mac and FCP or Avid, so I chose the FCP route. I've been an FCP editor ever since, because I find MacOS to have more stability than the Windows platform I was editing on. As good as Vegas was, there were still some times where the system would come crashing down.

I think you'll love Vegas, and any decently configured laptop will work well for you (get a good chunk of memory in it)

That's kinda strange. I've dropped a 5 hour clip from the project window right into Vegas and it didn't break up anything.

And no, you don't have to do anything special for 24pa. Shoot it all the time, and just drop it onto a 24fps timeline. Easy as you please.

Yea, the titler is awful. No kind way to say it. As for 4:2:2 material it's no problem at all. In fact, I've pushed around some RED 2k footage and it's just just fine to work with.

If I remember correctly, Vegas is using 4:4:4 on the timeline as default so anything you drop into a timeline is immediately given more color space.

PerroneFord - when you say drop it onto a 24fps timeline is this something I need to set up on Vegas or will it already set when it reads the clip?
