how good is the 5200

Considering getting the 5200 mainly for video but am not sure how it compares to something like the t3i/t4i. It looks very promising so far. Curious how everyone likes it that has it.

I did a test of one and have followed every little thing about the camera. I think from what I have seen it is a step above the lower priced Canons now. Sharper and definitely less moire/aliasing...and the clean 1080 HDMI alone gives you the possibility of bypassing the internal codec and recording Pro Res files or similar for editing. I'm also partial to the Nikon color rendering, but that is very subjective.

The one issue the Nikons still have that Canons don't, is that the aperture needs to be changed before entering live view.

Check EOShd.com -- there are several articles reviewing and comparing the 5200. Impressive camera for it's price!

yeah ive read where some of the settings were tricky at first to lock, change, etc. Overall I think the nikons have really improved on the video offerings so I am almost sold on it, even with the quirks that come with it. I was close to getting a canon but then I noticed the 800 but a little beyond the budget right now so the 5200 looks like a pretty good one.

Thanks for both of the replies. Yeah ill check out that site.

what lenses would be recommended for possibly doing a feature? I figure 50mm for sure.

Im hesitant to use ebay nowadays, been burned a few times. Thanks for the links ill check those out.

Ordered the camera. I didnt get the kit lens and opted for the 35mm. That should give me a decent start to learn how to use the camera. Figure Ill add a lens here and there until I get all the ones I want.

if we're talking image quality in video mode, I would rate the D5200 as "clearly above every Canon DSLR, except for the 5D3, 1DX, and 1DC"

yeah im very happy with it so far. My friend brings his t3i with him when we shoot which is still a great cam but its nice to have something different.
