How fast can you download?

Justin_Kirch

Runner Up.
I'm just showing off my school's connection to the good ole' internet. Can anyone beat this?:

And for those of you who can't read small print, that's 7.55 megabytes a second.

I pulled 9.2Mbps today at school. (It was still accelerating but the download was done!) I'll do it again tomorrow and post a grab if this thread is still going.

that's not an accurate representation of bandwidth. goto dslreports.com and see what it gives you.

enjoy it while it lasts! you'll pay through the nose for Web access in the real world... sad. should be subsidized like electricity and water if you ask me.

these aren't megabits they are megabytes, so that is 7.55 megabytes a second. it is accurate, considering in that screen grab i only have 40 megabytes left to download and the estimated time left is 5 seconds. i'm on a 100megabits per second T3 line, which means that i get about 12.5megaBYTES of bandwidth per download (if the server can handle it).

i'm downloading from a Steam powered gaming server...I go to school at TCU.

tidbits

1 megabyte is 8 megabits. so 9.2Mbps is about 1.15MBps

yah, Justin is right about the bits vs. bytes. but you never, ever get full 100base-X ethernet bandwidth. even with fiber. ever. there is no such thing as 100% optimization on a shared network.

sorry man, I think the IE download window is a horrible, representation of bandwidth capabilities. that is a single httpd transfer process using a simple estimation algorhythm based on approximations for that file at that moment, not true TCP/IP I/O at the card. it's fuzzy. very fuzzy.

needless to say, the fact you are observing those kinds of real world downloads is great. it's nice to see progress. we had a T1 for my whole school in '92. but we had 25" monitor NeXTs, SGI Indigo's, and Sun Sparc 5's with optical mice, and Mosaic .9 baby! nothing touched us.

At EDS in Flint we had a whole dedicated T1 to ourselves at the datacenter and used to FTP DOS games back and forth after we'd download from local BBS boards with our "hot new" 28.8 modems.

those were the days.

Oh man i remeber Baud rates.... 14.4.... My 56.6 back in 93 or 94 was a BEAST....

I got Cable modem now , 1.1 Megabytes a second is the fastes ive ever pulled.

PK, i feel your pain.

i was in turkey for 6 months, even DSL is like Dialup over there.....

the telecom infrastructure is awful.

Justin you must have downloaded the whole Scifest Video package in like 3 minutes...

That's about right, I don't really remember.

Oh crap, this makes me at 999. I'll have to hold off for a few days while I put together my masterpiece of a 1k video.

God i hate you.....

imean my 1 meg a second is good, but like... 7.55 is jsut insane.

I ahve a friend who is studying computer engineering in the Dominican republic ( dont laugh its one of the est schools i nthe world for computers)

he hacked another freinds network at school, so that he and the other freind got 200% more bandwith that they were alooted. He was DownLoading at 15 MB a second... sick... problem is no server can realistically push that out a line for any amount of time.

i expect your video to be great.

Caution now entering the "waybackmachine"

My first modem was in 1983 and it was 300 baud. I used it to download ascii art from compuserve and it felt like magic.

I'm on cable now I used to be on dsl and only got about 1/4 max of the speed I'm currently getting. There's another package my service provider offeres that unlocks the cap they've established it's like $20.00 more a month... I think this is more than fast enough

just did a test threw my service provider and it said 2930kbps so whatever. I usually sustain an average of 400KB/sec or more
