How Far will YOU go

and we CAN do it too. I believe if us indies do it, and do it right, we can compete with MOST of the high end films, especially with the tools available

and that would force hollywood, to distribute our films more or bring their prices and expectations down

I do it for the enjoyment of creating something that others can enjoy if only for a moment. Ultimately I would like to be good enough to show at a film festival, even a local one.

I'm curious about people's responses to the corollary question: what will you do/feel if you put in 10 years and still no one is paying you anything to make films?

That's why you ask yourself "Why?"

If you are doing it only for fame and fortune, it's possible. But you will probably run out of steam before you get there.

If you do it for the love and enjoyment, you keep doing it anyway. The accolades and money are a bonus.

I have a feeling that quite a few of the DVX users will make it big, seeing their work and all

i'm going to come across as a jerk for saying this, but i sorta think the opposite. i've seen a few people that have really blown me away, but i don't see many users making it big.

hopefully i'm wrong though.

I see dead people...

...I hope I can show what I have in my testa once I get to direct. I have not yet posted my work here. :(

But I have something in the works :)

I'd like to be able to make movies and travel. I don't care about fame, but to feel like I've created something is fantastic.

I only care about fame and fortune insomuch as it could enable me to make films with more creative latitude. My real aspiration is to be a director/photographer in the style of Kubrick, and if I am making my masterpieces 25 years from now, I will consider myself to be successful. But mostly, I just want to continue to learn and grow as a filmmaker. It's a marathon, not a sprint, to the top.

I think it's a mixed bag. celebrity has a down side, no doubt. But it can get you some phone calls returned.

In my previous post I mentioned how for me, one of the perks of what i do is the satisfaction of knowing i am helping a worthy cause (or some such nonsense). Since I posted, that exact thing happened. My wife got a call from a non-profit we work with. They showed 2 of our videos at a benefit dinner and some people were moved to tears. Then they wrote enough checks to get almost 3 times the amount of donations they normally get at the event.

I gotta tell you, that feels good.

I agree. - "celebrity" is too much. Some notoriety and (more importantly) respect from my peers are really my goals - the lower echelons of fame that open doors.

And Jim, I work at an education non-profit now as a day job. While I would love to be making films full-time, it is quite refreshing and satisfying to make a difference in the world in a direct way, and I am slowly building a video department here that could one day allow me (and others) to do both.

I plan on getting all sorts of botox collagen injections face lifts maybe even a calf implants... then I'll drive around in a convertible 1926 Bugatti spitting on cheap cars while drinking Vodka and doing cocaine with a $10,000 escort... if a cop pulls me over I'll just pay him off so he leaves me alone, only to put in a phone call to get him fired as soon as I get home... not only will I cheat but also I'll abuse my wife and emotionally harass my young fresh-from-the-mid-west assistant till they kill themselves... I will strive to kill at least one each year in this manner...

...being such a jerk off will undoubtedly bring me to the top where the few other players at my level will despise me...

...then I'll realize I completely redefined the meaning of being lonely and suffer in my death bed as I spend my last moments on earth knowing that ahead awaits eons of bad karma and might very well spend a few thousand lifetimes eating monkey poop of something disgusting like so.

lol... what goes around comes around... that's why I am doing this... cause I want to do something good, and hoping that it is big too
