How does youtube deal with copyright violations?

I notice that certain popular content is not in there. No Prince (or rather very little). No Saturday Night Live unless someone camcorders it off their TV. And of course no porn. (They got some naughty stuff but it's all barely under R rated.)

But then I do notice that some stuff is posted such as the movies in their entirety. For example, the film Glory is posted in about 10 sections along with the old cartoon movie Transformers.

I understand that some companies would actaully want folks to post snippets to generate interest of course. You can't find Lord of the Rings in it's entirety but you can find some of the battle scenes in their entirety. But why would a studio allow the whole movie Glory to be posted? They just don't care because it's so old and the revenue loss would be miniscule? I don't think I've ever seen a recent movie posted in it's entirety.

If I posted a new release would it not even make it past their content watchers? Why does an old movie make it on there?

Just asking because I'm finishing up on my first feature legnth film that I'm going to self distrbute and it scares the crap out of me that someone can so easily post my film and people can watch it until I can muster up a legal action.

YouTube deals with it when some one reports it, but it must be reported by some one who has copyright over the material. I think YouTube's only response tools include deleting the movie in question, and (depending on frequency of copyright violation) shutting down the offending account. Copyright lawsuits are completely up to the copyright holder(s).

You won't find NBC material because NBC has been diligent about policing YouTube for piracy of their content.

A couple of years ago, I found that all three of the original Indiana Jones trilogy were posted in 10-minute chunks, all by the same YouTube member. I called LucasFilm and let them know. The person I spoke with was not happy to hear this, but thankful for the call. Within a few days, the films were no longer on YouTube.
