So, I am seeing this with the DVX-100A as well as digital cameras. There is an auction that lists itself as stationed in the US and starts off a DVX100A or whatever at some ungodly price. But it will also mention it has others available or to please write before bidding and then you get a reply similar to this one I got while asking about a 20D Canon camera in "Las Vegas":

My units are brand new in their original box and they come with 1 year of warranty. If you will agree with my payment metoth and you will wire the money in max 24 hours the price will be $699us,
Because now I am in Europe , The shipping will be made trough UPS
express delivery and because I will pay for the shippment you will pay
the fees for the money transfer. The payment which I accept is Western Union money transfer because is the fastest way to conclude a payment, So if you agree with my terms please mail me ASAP

Anyone get involved in this? Are they just take your money and run scams or possibly some inferior European knock offs? I mean, the guy's spelling tells me he probably never stepped foot in the U.S. in his life....

Re: How Does This EBAY Digital Cam Scam Work?

My advice, don't ever do any Money Transfer transactions.  The money is untraceable, and no chance to get your cash back.  They can pick it up at any western union office, and once they have the money, you won't get anything.  A legitimate offer, won't insist on Western Union as the only payment method.  At least cover your A$$ by paying with a credit card.  Most credit cards have protections against fraud.

Another thing to watch out for usually when selling, is the guy that wants to send you more than you ask in a large bankers check.  He tells you to wait until the money is in your bank, and then send him the difference.  Two weeks later when the bank pulls the deposit back out of your account because it was a fraud, he already has his money and long gone...

The problem that makes these scams so convincing is that they come from accounts that have great feedback.  This is the result of all those phishing emails you get in your email that are saying you need to click on this link to verify your Ebay account.  The link is a malicious site collecting passwords and logins to hijack someone reputable account so they can scam others based on the reputable reputation of the hijacked account rating...

Interesting..... :-/

I think I have run across every one of those you have described. In the last month I have watched several different Digi cameras and video cameras and have found the seller is in Europe somewhere and is selling "off" of Ebay. The modes of payment are always some strange bank transfer or western union. I wasn't sure if they were running with the cash or not, but I began to wonder if there were some European knock offs that people were selling cheap.

How  does it work? - Simple! You send him money and that's it. You get nothing other then robbed, ripped off, money stolen.

He could offer a Ferrari at the same price and it carries the same weight. Not only does he not have the camera but he has never even touched one.

Re: How Does This EBAY Digital Cam Scam Work?

Report him to eBay and they'll close him down. Outside deals are a big no-no.

Re: How Does This EBAY Digital Cam Scam Work?

It can even be an inside deal if the account was hijacked..

Re: How Does This EBAY Digital Cam Scam Work?

Unfortunately reporting them does little good.  :( >:(

They have hundreds of accounts and just float around till they get kicked off one and move on to the next account.

Even sadder ... They hook a LOT of naive folks and run off with the loot.  >:(

I was bidding on some XL1s last year and got dozens of outside emails offering me Brand New cameras for under $1000. They were way over stock and just had to unload them right away! - Ya, ok.  ::)

Re: How Does This EBAY Digital Cam Scam Work?

I have noticed that the quickest way to check if its a scam is to see how long the person has been a ebay member.  Most of the scammers selling dvx's (or whatever) on ebay have been around for 2 weeks max with zero feedback.  The only time I saw someone selling with 1 good feedback, I check that persons account (who left the feedback), and the have been arount for just about a few days.  And most people scaming will never return your emails, and if they do, they'll be real vauge and insist its a good deal and you should pay.
I live in SD so I came across a few sellers in the same areas, I ask if I could pick up the item if they drop the shipping charges, most people will be real cool and say sure, but the scammers insist I pay shipping even if the live a few minutes away!!
