How does the image quality of the FS-100 compare to a GH3?

Nirv's comment "The main market will be pixel pervs who shoot cats and garden flowers and grade those shots in the giveaway Resolve" made me laugh as I've genuinely seen those shots being used to test camera's with.

I suspect he's just got a naughty sense of humour rather than any malice.

I am guessing that is EXACTY why he posted that. I also have learned a lot from Nirv
and would caution against assuming hostility on his part. Opinionated? Sure, but he's
got a lot to contribute to us FS100 owners.

I don't think DSLRs should be dismissed at all. Their beauty is in the simplicity. You can get a good image without a lot of tweaking profiles and what not. I think that is the big problem with the FS100 is at it requires so much tweaking that it can stifle your creativity. It needs to be somewhere in the middle. I guess that's why I love the FS700. You can get a great image with nice colors and good highlights without tweaking hardly at all kind of like a DSLR, but you can also go nuts on profiles if you wanted to like the FS100. It's has the complexity of a real camera, but it has a real simplicity to it also. That's how cameras should be IMO.

is the FS700 really inherently more simple than the FS100? I was under the impression that the layout was identical except for different sensor, NDs, and higher frame rates. AKA, better image quality but functions and operates the same as far as "tweaking"

They have there place just not as a main camera. Once you start doing any type of heavy grading they fall apart. The FS100 may take some work, but at least
I can get some fantastic images out of it with out spending 15K or more and it grades really nice as well.

Cinegammas which are only in the FS700 is basically a profile that is really user friendly. Does good colors, good highlights without much tweaking.

So, it has been brought to my attention that Nirv a major contributor to the FS100 forum has been banned by Kholi one of the moderators on DVXuser. It appears that politics have taken over truth. I joined this forum for the wealth of knowledge shared by professionals in the industry and because I thought it favored the truth, not being bias to any one camera.

Michael Solomon who made the statement (I've just never liked the way it renders skin tones or handles highlights, despite the multitude of picture profiles that I've sampled for it. I mean, don't get me wrong. It's a great budget camera)

He makes this statement on the FS100 forum mind you, where we have all seen good work on these issues by Postmaster, Nirv, Dermot, FuGZ, Kyle McConaghy, Rick Burnett, Allex Horner, Richard Allen Cook, Alaskacameradude, Matt Davis, Prophetmatt, Nemisis663, Bimdas, Rebelfilm, AndrewTaran, JoelPelletier, Asko, Cuervo, LiamR, Derg, SergeSmArt, the list goes on and on.

It seems that the people who complain the most about the FS100 are the ones that contribute the least into bringing out the best of the camera. If you don’t like your camera get rid of it. I for one, and I am sure Nirv felt the same way do not want to hear anymore on the FS100 forum about how my budget camera can’t handle highlights and skin tones when it’s a proven fact that it can.

And as far as the banning of Nirv goes, well to lose such a wealth of information on this forum is a very sad thing as he knows this camera very well and has created some great profiles for it. Only Postmaster himself could relate to the amount of effort it takes to create these great profiles and I for one am very appreciative. To ban him in my opinion was a big mistake.

Nirv's very first response to this thread was cross with the OP. Even after it was reported to us, and after the OP followed with a request for a more peaceful tone, Nirv's next post carried the same unpleasant tone. This isn't the first time he's been reported.

I asked Nirv to be a little less hostile. His response to that was snide, and someone saw fit to give him a short vacation to clear his head.

That someone was not me.

There was nothing political about it. He's allowed to come back after that time period is up, if he would like to, and hopefully her understands that an opinion is fine and very welcomed here when stated with tact and respect for other members.

As far as forum matters go, if you have an issue with anything that goes on here, report it or bring it to the attention of a site moderator. Luis, Stephen, Jason, or one of the David's are game to assist and assess anything that seems unfair.

Oh man... this thread got horribly side tracked. And I think that either I did a poor job communicating my sentiments or people are placing words in my mouth.

My fs-100 as great for what it was. I've gotten work with it the past year and it has done a great job for those shoots where I was contracted with it. Like any product, it has limitations. I'm at a point now where I'm considering other camera options to address some of the shortcomings that are built in to the camera. This is to improve my workflow and it will allow me to shoot in some situations where the FS-100 simply won't work. Yes, a great DP can do great things with any camera. But if you walked up to Deakins and asked him if he wanted to shoot with the Alexa or the FS-100 I bet you he would choose the Alexa. Cameras are tools, and all of these tools work differently.

I don't own a GH3. I was hoping someone here has used both the GH3 and the FS-100 and could offer insight to see if they were comparable as a b-cam. Simply by asking the question I was met with a shocking degree of hostility. It's just not necessary. I used to be rather active on this forum the first few months back when I owned the camera. I stopped frequenting and just stalked occasionally Frankly, the attitude and tone was much better then. It seems like people have become die hard fans and won't acknowledge the shortcomings of the camera now and immediately get defensive and up in arms whenever shortcomings are pointed out.

Nirv has posted a lot of great stuff. I even recently had a pleasant PM conversation with him regarding profiles. However, one's degree of contribution doesn't give you an excuse to be rude. I wasn't the one who reported him but I'm not surprised by the fact that he got a temporary ban.

Anyways.... that's the end of my tirade. Thank you to those who offered some insightful advice.

OHHHH NOOO
What is going on ?
I do not how all of you ,but I find out many very useful things from Nirv . Kholi I think you just exaggerate .

FS&GH3 hmmmm???
Fs100 is my first so advance camcorder . All of camcorder which I had before was always the same problem `poor low light` fS100 is amazing ,manage super extra in extremely condition . I do a lots of low light shoot ,and I can not image do it with gh3 . I do nt have gh3 ,but I see when someone just start to go up with iso ,dynamic rande goes down . Fs100 holds [SIZE=3]dynamic range very well .

Nirv - saying the right things the wrong way!

As for the GH3 as a B camera - well its lack of sound and decent monitoring make it a crap A camera but as a Bcam to the BMC - I think with the lens match it could be good

As for struggling with the FS100, well , the camera can work if you ignore everything you read on this board not written by Nirv!

I think you may be confusing the GH3 with certain other DSLRs (by Canon, perhaps?).
The GH3 has audio monitoring, and the levels of recording are decent. The GH2 was tested by some forum members and found to be similar in noise floor response to an HMC-150, which plenty of people have used as A-Cams. The GH3 has supposedly improved upon even that. The only thing you lose is the XLR inputs, since the camera relies on 3.5mm jacks for everything.

Which to me is a major loss. Also for monitoring you lose a well placed large HDMI

S

Ah, I thought you were referring to audio monitoring, as that was one of the major gripes with early DSLR adopters. The lack of XLR is unfortunate, as XLR ports are more robust. However, to be honest, as long as your connections are clean and not suffering from interference, I've used my big mics with a 3.5mm adapter and the sound quality is still there. It's pretty nice for run-and-gun or interview scenarios. Anything more than that I generally work with a dedicated sound guy with an external system anyway. But that's neither here nor there... there are plenty of other legit reasons a GH3 isn't an ideal A cam to many people.

What's this about losing HDMI?

Well, if that statement had any truth to it you minds well ignore Nirv, Postmaster, Dermot, FuGZ, Kyle McConaghy, Rick Burnett, Allex Horner, Richard Allen Cook, Alaskacameradude, Matt Davis, Prophetmatt, Nemisis663, Bimdas, Rebelfilm, AndrewTaran, JoelPelletier, Asko, Cuervo, LiamR, Derg, SergeSmArt, and again the list goes on and on.

It's statements like yours with no factual basis other than lack of experiance with the camera that get under the collar of people like Nirv, No wonder he gets annoyed. I have produced great work with this camera thanks to Nirv, Postmaster, Kyle McConaghy and many others.

I am a digital film major almost finished with a bachelors, and between school and outside jobs I am shooting all the time. Have I ever had problems with the FS100 Yes, but not because of the cameras limitations only because of my lack of knowledge with it.

It's the people listed above and many others on here that keep me coming to this forum, and as for struggling with the FS100 maybe it's time for you to get a different camera god knows you won't struggle with the BMC, but don't get me wrong I think it produces nice looking images just too many problems with it to be a viable option for me, of course I wouldn't go to the BMC forum and complain about it I just wouldn't buy one.
My next investment will probably be and F5

Considering that Nirvs profiles (and mine) are almost completely backwards to people like Franks I think my statement was fairly true. There are only two or three posters who do not buy faux log profiles

(which IMO induce excessive banding and loss of colour differentiation)

Im glad you are near completing a degree thats good to know. Now lighten up.

Am I struggling with the camera? Well yes Ive put a lot of work into getting a look that works for me http://www.sammorganmoore.com/backlot/fs100-ferrari-profile

Is that profile any good? Only you can judge but Im happy with both my skintones and highlight rolls. Lack of experience with the FS100? Ive had it from the week it was launched. You can find a bunch of my tests here http://tinyurl.com/atfzd4q

As for the BMC I think it will easily produce wonderful images, it does however have we documented 'handling issues' like no XLR and a somewhat challenging sensor size

Well, I am assuming you used the FS100 for your reel either way there were some very nice shots on there. Good work

Thanks. Well its 5d2, 7d, EX1, Fs100 and D90(!) - Id say my best colour is from the 5d, but I can now nearly match them colour wise, sharpness wise the FS100 is way sharper, and on jobs with sound (and other commerclial pressures like roll time) in a different class..

All of the colours are a bit crap as they have been subjected to shifts by FCP6 which I have now abandoned due to colour instability.

Colour in video seems to be a tough journey, particularly with the FS100

I agree with gene_can_sing. Cinegammas would drastically improve the FS100, not that there's wrong with it to begin with. IMO, images from Panasonic's GH series never really pop until a hack is applied. I've seen some jaw dropping images from FS100s (on this forum) that stand up against just about anything else out there. That's not even taking into consideration the NEX firmware was successfully hacked a few months back. http://www.eoshd.com/content/8751/sony-nex-hack-update-1st-camera-purchased-for-someone1-00

Imagine what the FS100 would be capable of then.
