How does the DVX compare to the PD170?

I'm getting my DVX this week (after getting one that didn't work before), and I am just curious how it goes against the PD170. I use the PD170 at school, and it's a nice camera, but I'm not impressed by the image quality.

It can look good, but certainly won't wow anyone.

What can I expect from the DVX out of the box (well, bag)?

There is absolutely no comparison. Out of the bag, the DVX looks awsome. I suggest just fooling around with the settings. Do some tape tests, and view them on a calibrated monitor, and record what settings you used, and what looked good. Try filming in various lighting environments and settings. It will take a bit to learn the ins and outs of the camera, but you will have great images with even the factory presets. Congratulations! You now own a pd-170 killer.

I used the PD-150 and 170 in more than 10 productions, nice quality, great in low light, but a little soft for my taste and I don't like the camera controls. I got my DVX100a one month ago, already did a promotional video and I'm impressed with the features, quality and controls. The DVX colors and texture are wonderful.

Let's put it this way: PD170=VW Beatle. DVX=FERRARI! Got it?  ;D
You made the right choice my friend…

Re: How does the DVX compare to the PD170?

PD170 = a superb interlace-only video camera, lacking only in a little better manual control of zoom/focus.

DVX = basically everything the PD170 is, plus movie-like 24P, better audio, 30p, and much better image controls.

Re: How does the DVX compare to the PD170?

the DVX is a great cam, no doubt. it is used more by TV stations than the DVX is, because it is a SONY and is great in its interlaced mode.
AND the SONY has a good tele, which the DVX lacks. but on the other hand the DVX has the better wide.... ::)

i really like the SONY softness sometimes and am actually trying to get the DVX to get a bit "softer". the good thing about the DVX is, it can be soft and sharp, has way more setting-options and is very intuitive to use (at least for me who does BetaSP usually).
and the comes the 24p/25p stuff which is a totally new game and blows any SD SONY out of the league....good choice man!

Re: How does the DVX compare to the PD170?

While I weight pro's and con's and serious consider giving a moderate, sensible answer, I can only come ou with: "The DVX kicks the PD-170's ass!"

Re: How does the DVX compare to the PD170?

I couldn't stand the front heavy pd170, especially with the wide angle on. The dvx is sooo comfortable with the weight being evenly distributed.
Also the little viewfinder is annoying, especially compared to the huge one of the dvx
