How does Sony digital extender work?

When I zoom out the PXW-X70´s built in telephoto lens the widest aperture quickly creeps up from max f2.8 making it harder to record in low light. I have found a way to get around this by using the "digital extender" function that doubles the amount of zoom without boosting the aperture. I expected using this function would have a negative effect on image quality but find various reports that it does not "seem" to have a very negative effect. However I am not able to find anywhere a clear explanation about how this "digital extender" works? Does it just crop the frame same as the "digital zoom" function or does it use bits of the sensor not normally used like the "clear image" zoom function does, or...

... maybe there is an elf with a little camcorder inside the lens who wakes up whenever the digital extender button is pressed and...

of course another way to get around this is by shoving up the gain but even I can see this does effect image quality... so would like to ask if anybody know how this "digital extender" function works and/or what actual effect it has on image quality?
