How does downrezzed HD footage look like? HD -> SD

SD DVDs with source material from SD never look as good as film transfers. A film DVD always looks as if it would be higher resolution, not to mention the way better colors. So, how does the footage of the HVX look like when it is downrezzed from HD? I should look much better, as there is much more information available for every single pixel. So it would be the best to always shoot HD even when you deliver SD?

I did a very raw downconvert in FCP4 for Kaku's clips and burned them onto a dvd, mixed with SD clips from the DVX100. The difference was astounding, the 720p-originated clips were so much sharper. 1080p-clips for some reason did not downconvert properly, I guess I should have done some kind of a pulldown removal on them or something. Anyway, judging from this quick test, I'd say even for SD applications originating on HD is worthwhile (This is said without any testing with DVCPRO50). I checked the results both on my Powerbook and our living room Sony 32" CRT.

If Barry does a side-by-side with DVX100B I hope he includes 720p downconversion in-camera and a NLE downconversion in the mix, also DVCPRO50. It would really tell where the money is in SD.

So then there is no more need for that 34 000$ SD DV cam from Panasonic. I also saw a clip from a feature shot with it, it did not impress me much. for 31 000$ more, I expected a difference you can tell.

obviously you'd still benefit from the high res chip..
if you record HD first, you'll also have more headroom to play with special effects
(although people some people disagree). a SD greenscreen sample can be seen here:
