How does Auto Focus work on GH1 in Creative Movie Mode?

I have the focus mode set to "single-area", AF-C. Once I half press the shutter button to focus, then hit record, do I have to continuously hold the half pressed shutter button down so that the camera will continue to refocus on moving objects?

Would "23-point" auto-focus work faster, or slower?

I want the camera to continue to focus on whatever I have selected in the viewfinder while shooting video-and, I've searched high and low, and can't find the answer.

If you are using an AF lens, you don't even have to half push the shutter button to auto focus. The GH1 does it automatically. If you DO push the shutter button halfway, you force an immediate full focus, and if you HOLD the shutter button half pushed, this is the only way to PREVENT the GH1 from auto focusing. Otherwise, the GH1 will auto focus all the time. So, if what you desire is to have the GH1 operate in continuous auto focus mode, then, you' don't even need to touch the shutter button. That is its default operation. In my experience it focuses much more quickly in 720/60p than 1024/24.

The 14-140 mm lens is made for fast auto focus video on the GH1. The auto-focus performance of any other lens will be far inferior to the 14-140 mm (in video mode). The 14-140 was deigned from the ground up for hi-speed auto focus in video mode.

I'd be interested to know about the performance of auto focus in different metering modes. If anyone has done tests, please share.

Thanks. Do you find "single point", or "23-point" to be more effective/faster, for objects that move?
Just have the 14-42mm kit lens, and it focuses OK-haven't noticed a difference in speed between FHD and SH, yet.

Guess I should keep my finger off the darn shutter button, huh??

I haven't done any tests, but, my guess would be the single point would be faster? I usually use the shutter button half press to quickly focus, but, if I want the lens to do the rest, I take my finger off.

You will find that most folks in this user group are strong advocates of using only manual focus.

I use full auto, auto one-time focus (which means holding the shutter button halfway to focus and then never letting up throughout a clip), or, full manual focus. It all depends on the situation.

why not use AF-S instead of AF-C?

AF-S is auto focus single as opposed to continous

because the "subject" is constantly moving.....??? and, I have "pre-auto focus" set to AF-S, instead of AF-Q...is that wrong?

Also, I'm guessing that with manual focus lenses-like Nikon-the screen doesn't zoom to assist with focus. I noticed it doesn't zoom when your shooting video, which makes it kinda tough to re-adjust focus manually.

With Manual focus lenses you need to hit the 4 position button once on the left position, then hit the center select button to get the 10x focus assist view. I think there is an improvement to this two button press method in the GH2, (not sure I only dream of owning a GH2) but, this 2 button press method works on all manual focus lenses on the GH1. Of course, this is done before you start shooting any video. Once you start shooting, you can't really get the 10x zoom focus assist without stopping the video (...well, I've never tried....but...since I shoot 99% hand held, there is no way to do those button presses and still get steady video anyway...)
