I'd like to be able to sync the ending of an mp3 song with the ending of the audio of some footage I shot of someone singing the same song as the mp3. I've got other shots of the night that I want to score with the mp3, but then at the end I want the mp3 to fade perfectly into the audio of the person singing in the footage. I'm sure this is not an industrial light and magic trick, but I'm stuck in FCP7.

MP3 files are not suitable for production audio in FCP. You need to convert it to either WAV or AIFF, 16-bit/48kHz. That will have some adverse effects on the audio quality, but it's necessary for using the file in FCP.
Past that, use your ears and the waveforms to match your edit point.

yes, I've found that using the waveforms can work great if they match up. put each track on a separate audio track, of course.
