How do you put a filter on and still use the lens hood?

Newbie question but.... if I buy a filter to protect my lens, but can't use the lens hood, how do I get rid of sun flare and then do I have to buy a cap too? Is there a filter solution that protects the lens but also allows the sunshade that comes with the EX1 to still fit on?
 
I put a filter on the lens and was still able to put the hood back on. Some people recommend buying a slim filter, but I just bought the standard size. I have an EX3 so I don't know if that makes a difference. As far as I know it's the same lens.
 
I don't know about that cam in particular, but I take the hood off, put the filter on, put the hood back on. Yeah, it's a bit of a pain, but way cheaper than a matte box.
 
Some regular filters fit under the lens hood. I just got some tiffen regular nd's and they fit under the hood. Yet a b+w regular size circ polarizer did not and I had to exchange it for the slim version. Best to check before you buy. Or just buy slim versions always to cover yourself, but they are always more expensive than the regulars.

Another option is to buy a wide angle circular metal lens hood 77mm and do away with the sony hood. You can find them on ebay for $8. And then get a lenscoat to cover it. I did this. It makes the camera look less conspicuous and can take bumps better than the plastic Sony hood.
 
Which filter do you have? I bought the B+W UV and it's too fat... there are some really cheap slim ones on ebay but then there are the B+W slim ones that are like $150+.... that's a lot of money for a piece of glass, and I'd want it to fit since the one I already bought doesn't.

I prefer to use the hood that came with the EX1, it's great, because there's no need for a lens cap.

+1 on lens hood and filter.

I had the same experience with a B+W polarizing filter. Too thick! I guess when I buy my own (I was TRYING to use a fellow photographer's) I'll get the more expensive slim model.
 
I just tested a B&W UV MC (non-slim version) with the lens hood and it fit fine. Even looks like it has a couple millimeters to spare.

Just thought that I would mention that I have encountered no problems with the B&W 486 standard, not slim, filter on my EX3. The lens shade fits over it just fine without any coaxing.
 
I've actually picked up about 5 second hand 77mm filters from Penn Camera... nothing fancy about them, just sky uv filters for lens protection... Screw them into the lens threads, make sure not to tighten but not over tighten, make sure the lens hood screw is fully unscrewed before mounting, twisting to lock and screwing back down to the EX1 front guide ring. The lens hood shutters should close just fine over a standard 77mm filter... At least it does for me...

If that doesn't work, get a cheap mattebox...
