How do you move files around and relink in Avid?

I captured all my footage on to an external drive..but now I want to transfer everything onto my local C: drive. How do I do this? I've never moved around files yet and need to now.

Thanks!

First, if you're going to keep editing with this footage you don't want it on your system drive. It'll bog the system down and probably give you a lot of underrun and overrun errors.

If you don't have another internal or external drive and you have to transfer it to your system drive, do this:

On your external you'll find one or two folders at the root of the drive (let's call the drive E:\). If you captured OMF media you'll see this:

E:\OMFI MediaFiles\(Media will be in here)

If you captured MXF, you'll see this:

E:\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1\(Media files in here)

To move them to your C: drive, shut down Avid. Copy the first folder (OMFI MediaFiles or Avid MediaFiles) to your C: drive, at the root of the drive. So you'll have:
C:\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1\(Media goes here)
C:\OMFI MediaFiles\(Media goes here)

Restart Avid, it should automatically relink all your footage, and edit!

Thanks for the info.

I wasn't aware that it wasn't recommended to have your captured footage on the same drive. I'll just move it all to my spare USB external hard drive for now. I just thought it would be better on my system drive C:/ since it's a raptor drive and much faster in processing stuff than a regular drive.

I did a cut and paste of the folder on to my other external drive thanks.

My folder is "Avid Media Files" since I'm using Avid Media Composer.

Thanks again

With a Raptor drive, you may be ok, but it's still not recommended. Your system will have to read the media and read any commands from your Media Composer software, so it's working twice as hard off the same drive.

Regarding the Avid MediaFiles, that's because you're capturing MXF media (the default from Avid MC3.0 on). If you go to your Media Creation settings you can always change it to OMF, but that's only necessary if you're going to take your project to a legacy system that's OMF only.

Hi,
I had to re-install and have same issue with files not relinking
your solution worked, thanks for posting
how can i move the folder back to my data drive from my c:, will avid track it?

Also, having some issues with source & record windows, audio plays but video does not, just a black screen, cant work out whats going on

it workd for a few days fine now its not,

any ideas?

If you want to move footage from your C: drive another drive, just move it at the desktop level. To be extra safe, copy it from the C: drive to your media drive. Then rename the OMFI MediaFiles folder and the Avid MediaFiles folder on your C: drive so Avid won't see it (just add an x to the folder name - for example xOMFI MediaFiles and xAvid MediaFiles).

Start Avid, make sure your Avid is seeing the footage you copied to your external, and if it is delete the xOMFI MediaFiles and xAvid MediaFiles folder on your C: drive. If it's not seeing it, go to File-->Refresh Media Directories and Files-->Reload MediaDatabases. That should force Avid to rescan the media on your drives and reload the databases, relinking your files when it's done.

If you still have problems after transferring the media, post back. Give us the steps you took and we'll get to the bottom of it.
